Miniature supercapacitors made of DVD burners

American researchers recently unveiled a new battery they have developed that can charge phones and even cars in seconds.

This device, called a micro-graphene supercapacitor, charges or discharges 100 times times as fast as 1000 times times faster than conventional batteries. The use of a single atom of carbon-based batteries is easy to produce, but also easy to combine with electronic products, and may even lead to the emergence of smaller mobile phones. The team said their new breakthrough would not only lead to faster charging of mobile phones and cars, but also to smaller electronic products. "The combination of energy storage equipment and circuits is a major challenge, and it often limits the miniaturization of the entire system," said Richard Kana, professor of materials science at the University of California, Los Angeles, Henry Samuiri Engineering and Applied Sciences. ”

In order to develop this new miniature supercapacitor, the researchers used two-dimensional carbon flakes, the graphene, which is only as thick as a single atom in the third dimension. The team also found a way to easily produce the battery, using a standard DVD burner. "The traditional approach to manufacturing micro-supercapacitors involves labour-intensive lithography, which has proved difficult to produce cost-effective devices, so it has greatly limited their commercial use," said researcher Aire Kadi. And we use a consumer grade of light engraving, with a much lower cost than the traditional device large-scale production of graphene micro supercapacitors. With this technology, we can produce over 100 miniature supercapacitors on a single disc in less than 30 minutes with inexpensive materials. ”

To produce an efficient supercapacitor battery, researchers need to install two electrodes separately to maximize the usable table area between them. Doing so will cause the supercapacitors to store more charge. The previous design stacked a layer of graphene together as electrodes, which is like a slice of bread on a sandwich. However, this practice does not work on electronic circuits. In the new design, the researchers, in a cross-cutting manner, mounted the electrodes side-by-side, similar to the fingers that crossed each other. This helps to expand the usable surface area of two electrodes and reduces the route that ions in the electrolyte need to propagate. The new supercapacitors are therefore equipped with higher charging and speed performance than stacked contrast objects. People can even make this stuff at home, researchers say.

Richard Kana said that for supercapacitors, it is "fast" is only a number of upgrades, "small" is its greatest value. "The miniaturization and downsizing of electronic products has always been hampered by energy storage systems," he said. The size of the battery is too large to drag the entire product flexible and compact. "The new supercapacitors not only have a smaller footprint, but can easily be integrated into other accessories. "This approach is simple, cost-effective, and can be produced at home," Aire Kadi said. We only need a DVD burner and a dispersion of oxidized graphite in the water, which can be bought at a very low price on the market. The group says it now wants to work with electronics manufacturers. "We are currently looking for business partners to help us produce our graphene micro supercapacitors in large quantities," Qana said. The
