Ready to update your kernel in Ubuntu 16.04 or its derivative versions (like Debian and Linux Mint)? If you are ready, please read on!

First step: Check the installed kernel version

To find out which version of the current system is installed, we can:

$ uname-sr

The following shows the output of the above command in Ubuntu 16.04 server:

Check the kernel version in Ubuntu

Step two: Upgrading the kernel in Ubuntu 16.04

To upgrade the Ubuntu 16.04 kernel, open http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/and select the desired version in the list (the latest kernel is 4.10.1 when you publish this article).

Next, download the . deb file According to your system architecture:

For 64-bit systems:

$ wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10.1/linux-headers-4.10.1-041001_ 4.10.1-041001.201702260735_all.deb$ wget HTTP://KERNEL.UBUNTU.COM/~KERNEL-PPA/MAINLINE/V4.10.1/ linux-headers-4.10.1-041001-generic_4.10.1-041001.201702260735_amd64.deb$ wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~ Kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10.1/linux-image-4.10.1-041001-generic_4.10.1-041001.201702260735_amd64.deb

This is a 32-bit system:

$ wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10.1/linux-headers-4.10.1-041001_ 4.10.1-041001.201702260735_all.deb$ wget HTTP://KERNEL.UBUNTU.COM/~KERNEL-PPA/MAINLINE/V4.10.1/ linux-headers-4.10.1-041001-generic_4.10.1-041001.201702260735_i386.deb$ wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~ Kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.10.1/linux-image-4.10.1-041001-generic_4.10.1-041001.201702260735_i386.deb

After downloading all of these kernel files, install the following:

$ sudo dpkg-i *.deb

After the installation is complete, reboot and verify that the new kernel is already in use:

$ uname-sr

That's it. You can download a newer version of the kernel that is installed by default than Ubuntu 16.04.

Summarize

This article shows how to easily upgrade the Linux kernel on Ubuntu systems. There is another process here, but we don't show it here because it needs to compile the kernel from the source code, which is not recommended for production Linux systems.

If you are still interested in compiling the kernel as a learning experience, you can get instructions on how to do it in the Https://kernelnewbies.org/KernelBuild website.
