Use of performance monitoring tools

A product requires stress testing, so I decided to use the performance tool provided by Windows2003 for system performance monitoring.

If you have sufficient permissions in the test environment, you can easily use a dedicated machine to Execute Performance Tools and remotely monitor the target server, compared to executing monitoring tools on the target server, it does not impose additional resource burden on the target server.

When you execute the "performance" tool and prepare to start the test, you will find that the chart that monitors the current system status only records data less than two minutes by default, we usually need to monitor the data for a longer time. How can we use this tool to obtain the desired monitoring data? Next I will introduce it step by step:

1. Right-click "my computer" and click "Computer Management ".

2. Expand System Tools and Performance Logs and alarms ".

3. Right-click "counter log ".

4. Select "New log", enter your desired name in the displayed dialog box, and click "OK". The following window appears.

5. Click "add counter.

6. In the pop-up window, select "select counter from computer.

7. enter the name of the computer you want to test, for example: \ MS-DAVIDCOMPUTE, or click the drop-down list to select.

8. Click the drop-down list of "performance object.

Note that if your Windows logon user does not have sufficient permissions, the list cannot be expanded normally, or the system prompts that the connection is unavailable. You can use an account with sufficient permissions when logging on to windows, or manually set a Logon account for the "Performance Logs and alarms" service.

If you want to manually set a Logon account for the "Performance Logs and alarms" service, you can expand "services and applications" and select "services ", select "Performance Logs and alarms" from the list on the right ".

9. Right-click Properties and select the logon tab in the pop-up Properties window. For example, you can manually modify the Logon account used by the Service.

10. If you confirm that you have sufficient permissions, you will have the following interface. After you select "performance object", the following list lists the relevant monitoring performance indicators.

11. Select the performance metrics you want to monitor in the list, click "add", and then click "close. This will be shown in the following figure:

12. For example, the monitoring metric you selected is displayed in the "counter" list. You can also modify the sampling time. The default value is 15 seconds. Click the "Schedule" tab to set whether to manually start or stop logs or to timed start or stop logs. Here we use manual start or stop.

13. Click OK. A prompt is displayed indicating whether you want to create a log file.

14. Click OK.

.

15. Right-click the newly created log "test" and select "start" from the pop-up menu. The icon turns green, for example:

16. After a period of time, you can stop the log counter, right-click "test" and choose "stop.

17. Next, we can observe the logs we recorded. Click "start" and "Control Panel". In "Administrative Tools", double-click "performance" to run the monitoring tool.

18. In the pop-up main form, the default data currently displayed is the active status of the current computer. We need to delete the default counters and re-Add the logs recorded above. Select a project in the list and click "delete" in the toolbar to delete all the items.

19. After deleting all default items, such:

20. Right-click the empty list and choose "properties" from the shortcut menu, for example:

21. Select the "Source" label and "Log File". Then, the "add" button will become available.

22. Click "add.

23. In the pop-up file selection dialog box, select the log file you recorded last time and click "open.

24. Click the "time range" button. The time band below will become available.

25. Drag the time belt to the left and right squares to change the time range you want to observe. Click OK.

26. Right-click the empty list and select "add counter ".

27. in the Add counter window, all the performance metrics that you recorded are displayed by default. You can select the items you want to observe, click "add", and then click "close.

28. Finally, you will see the performance record you recorded. The time range is also the time range you specified.

Note: during the entire process, you may not be able to start the "counter", most of the reason is that the account permissions used by the Service are insufficient. For details, refer to step 1.
