Under Ubuntu, text files are usually opened with the command line, such as commands Gedit, more, cat, Vim, and less. However, when you need to open other format files, such as PDF, JPG, mp3 format files, we usually go into the directory where the file is located, double-click Open, it is very effective. In fact, these format files, even Web pages, can be opened by command Xdg-open (opens a file or URL in the user's preferred application), as simple as opening a file.
Let me give you two examples:
[Email protected]:~$ xdg-open La_isla_bonita.mp3
[Email protected]:~$ xdg-open Http://[email protected]:~$ has created a new window in an existing browser session.]
Xdg-open will choose the appropriate program to open the specified file, the same as double-click to open the effect. In My computer, the first example will be opened with Totem Movie player, the second example will be opened with Google Chrome, not Firefox, this is because Google Browser is my default browser.
Here's how:
Xdg-open {File | URL}
Xdg-open {--help |--manual |--version}
This is open with the default program, or you can specify that the program opens
such as: if there is mplayer, direct maplayer *.avi

In such as Open Picture: with display example: There is a picture under/root/desktop/abc.png,display/root/desktop/abc.png
This same as CMD in Windows opens the Picture:start D:\123.jpg
