Win2003 server disk quotas reveal the enabling chapter

This article describes how to use the disk quotas feature of a Windows Server 2003 system to manage the user disk quotas for a server. First look at how to enable this feature.

If you are a member of the Administrators group, you can enable quotas on NTFS volumes. When quotas are enabled on a volume that already contains files, the Windows system calculates the disk space that is used by all users who have copied files, saved files, or taken ownership of files to that volume at that point in time. The quota limits and warning levels are then applied to all current users and to users who start using the volume from that point in time, based on the results of the calculations. You can then set different quotas or disable quotas for one or more users. You can also set quotas for users who have not yet copied files on the volume, saved files, and acquired ownership of files.

For example, if you share the \\Production\Public folder from the root directory of an NTFS volume, you may want to set the quota limit for all users of the \\Production\Public folder to 50MB. Also ensure that two users with large files on the server have a limit of 100MB. If all two users store files in the \\Production\Public folder, you can select them and set their quota limit to 100MB. However, if you enable quotas, where one or two users do not store files on the server, you need to select the users in the Quota Entries window and set the quota limit to a value that is higher than the default for new users.

The following are the ways to configure the Enable user disk quotas on the local server:

1th, double-click the My Computer option on the desktop or Start menu, and on the disk volume on which you want to enable disk quotas (be sure to NTFS-formatted volumes), and then select the Properties option, in the dialog box that opens, select the Quotas tab, dialog box.

deny disk space to users exceeding the quota limit
2nd step, select the Enable quota Management complex option. Then select other options as needed, and click the OK button to complete the process of enabling disk quotas. These options are explained below:

     limit disk space to
Select this single option, You can enter the amount of disk space that new users of the volume are allowed to use, and the amount of disk space that has been used before the event is written to the system log. Administrators can view these events in Event Viewer. You can use decimal values (for example, 20.5) in disk space and warning levels, and select the appropriate units (such as KB, MB, GB, and so on) from the drop-down list.

     user exceeds warning level
If this check item is selected, When quotas are enabled, events are written to the system log on the local computer as long as the user exceeds their warning level. The other is the same as selecting the "Log event when the user exceeds the quota limit" option.

If you want to manage disk quotas on a remote computer, you can do this as follows:

1th, right-click on the "My Computer" option in the Start menu and select the "Map Network Drive" option to open the dialog box.

2nd, in the dialog box shown in the Folder text box, type the path to the volume on the remote computer where you want to manage disk quotas, and then click the Finish button so that the corresponding volume for the remote computer is connected to the local server. The following method, like the disk quota method described above on the local server, is not covered here.
