In the winter of 2003, Mr. Tan haoqiang led us to Europe to study computer teaching. The biggest impression on my mind is the difference in Chinese and foreign teaching models.
I. Classroom teaching is not the only teaching method
Before going abroad, I have heard of an article written by a foreign student titled "overseas students watching Tsinghua", which is about the difference between the teaching of Tsinghua University and that of American universities: just as Chinese college students begin to breathe a while after entering the university after almost brutal competition for the college entrance examination, American college students are struggling to learn their skills in the ocean of knowledge and ability. This is partly because of the differences in teaching models in the United States.
During our study in Europe, we learned that foreign engineering teaching generally involves three steps: classroom teaching, lab teaching, and Project assignment training, in addition, foreign engineering teaching attaches great importance to experimental teaching and project assignment training. When we had a discussion with students at the University of bilhei, France, they told us that their classes were generally taught in large classes, with hundreds of students allowed. In class, teachers never named the students, students can't listen, but the school has strict requirements on lab courses and project assignment training. Students must do this. The teacher corrected the report very seriously and asked the students to answer questions.
I have heard many times that Chinese students have a high theoretical level and foreign students have strong hands-on skills. When I returned from a visit to Europe, I had a stronger understanding of this phenomenon. It seems that I still have some further ideas: Generally speaking, foreign students have much stronger hands-on abilities than domestic students, but Chinese students do not have a strong theoretical level. To be more accurate, Chinese students are more competent to take the test. This situation deserves vigilance. One important reason for this situation is that we pay too much attention to classroom teaching, while ignoring the training of experiment teaching and project assignments. In addition, many classroom teaching courses are "exam courses ", the teaching content is also exam-oriented. For example, in many schools, programming courses that are critical to computer science are also centered around the level test, rather than improving students' programming skills as the primary goal of teaching. If you do not seriously reflect on such ideas and models, you will continue to miss your children.
2. The examination is not the only form of academic Score Evaluation
In Europe, we can see that with the reform of the teaching model, the examination is not the only form of the student's academic score evaluation. The report, paper, design and discussion that comes with it become more and more important.
I once asked a foreign student if your reports and papers were plagiarized? The student replied: Generally, I do not dare because the teacher is very familiar with the papers published outside. If he finds that he is plagiarized, he will fail. A professor also told us: "We are not afraid of student plagiarism, because we have to discuss it. Through the discussion, we can see whether these reports are completed by the students themselves ." We deeply feel that the discussion has become a more important form of student's academic level appraisal than the examination. The school is also creating good conditions for discussion.
When a professor at the University of Rotterdam, Luxembourg, introduced us about computer teaching in a conference room that could accommodate about a hundred people, he told us by the way: there are many such meeting rooms in their buildings, but now they have to be transformed into small rooms that can only accommodate a dozen people, in order to strengthen the discussion after the experiment and project operation training.
Compared with the old exam, "discussion" can not only examine the depth and breadth of students' knowledge, but also examine students' innovative thinking and understanding of problems from the perspective of personalized development, "discussion" is also a channel for communication between teachers and students. However, this advanced form of student scores is rarely used in education in China.
Iii. teachers' responsibilities in the Information Age
As early as 1200 years ago, Han Yu said: "The teacher, so preaching, teaching, and confusing ." Modern education theory holds that as a teacher, there is also an important role in creating an environment for knowledge and ability building for students. In the information age, the previous role of teachers has been weakened, because the information age provides many ways to acquire knowledge, and students do not have to acquire knowledge from teachers. Relatively speaking, the second role of teachers must be strengthened. In fact, the latter requires teachers to pay more hard work and professionalism. At this point, we should learn from foreign professors.
The reform of the teaching mode and Student Achievement Evaluation Method tests the teachers' business level and due diligence. In order to design a computer network experiment, I asked a graduate student to help me find information. Once, I asked the graduate student how he thought about checking so many materials. The graduate student told me that he saw some foreign professors, it has been nearly ten years to design a computer network experiment. But how many professors in China are willing to pay this price for the experiment construction?
If a professor does not have his own teaching style, he or she should not be a good professor. However, many teachers, including professors, do not have their own special characteristics in their lectures. Especially after using courseware, the role of the lectures has become a Courseware screening. Some teachers seem to be very serious in their lectures. They have made the lectures very clear and meticulous, leaving no space for further study and thinking for the learners, instead, it mistakes the training of students' creative thinking and the cultivation of practical ability.
Iv. Education authorities should first change their educational concepts
Education in the information age requires diversified and personalized teaching. However, we note that foreign universities basically do not specify uniform teaching materials. Each school has its own unique position, and most professors have their own teaching style and characteristics. However, this is not the case for most colleges and universities in China.
Fundamentally speaking, our education is basically a planned economy model in the industrial age. The industrial model has created the form of teaching organized by fixed classes, and the planned economy has created a unified national professional setup and unified evaluation standards, and a unified teaching material and teaching plan for the same course throughout the school. Although this education model can spur schools and teachers with lower levels to improve their teaching level, it also binds schools with higher levels, especially those with higher levels of teachers' subjective initiative. For example, some schools greet teaching evaluation by "doing materials" and "making documents". The spread of this ethos makes the evaluation increasingly formalism; the mandatory provisions on the use of teaching materials and the excessive "Emphasis" on teaching plans make it difficult to stand out in High-level teaching forms, not only does experiment and project assignments not receive much attention in important teaching links, but it also fosters rigid exam style and bad habits of cheating; the evaluation conditions for teachers' titles requiring "Full talent" and the assessment requirements for the number of papers that are excessively valued have led to a tendency of ignoring teaching in colleges and universities. These are all contrary to the scientific development concept.
The scientific concept of development requires that education must conform to the trend of the times, rather than stick to the rules. It must develop its connotation rather than pursue the surface. It must mobilize various positive factors for harmonious development, rather than ignoring this. In accordance with the requirements of the scientific concept of development, in terms of teaching philosophy and teaching mode, we should focus on the development of Classroom Teaching from over-emphasizing classroom teaching to classroom teaching, experimental teaching and project assignment training, from teaching-centered to education-centered development.
In a period where no baton is needed, we hope that the baton will keep pace with the times and change the rules we turn.
At present, the chain reaction caused by the incidents of the CET4 and cet6 test will eventually impact the transformation of the educational concepts and management functions of the education authorities, and of course the change of computer education concepts. We are looking forward to the early arrival of these changes.
