Many tools and software in Kali can be installed in most Linux distributions, the Offensive Security team invested a lot of time in the development of the Kali system to improve this Linux release for penetration testing and Security auditing.

Kali Linux is a security-oriented release version based on Debian. The system is well known for its pre-Installation of hundreds of well-known security tool software.

Kali, even in the information security field, has a high-gold certification called"Kali penetration test(Pentesting with Kali) authentication. The applicant must successfully intrude into multiple computers within 24 hours of the difficulty, and then complete the penetration test report within 24 hours and send it to the Security personnel of Offensive Security for review. The person who passes the test will receive the OSCP certificate.

This installation guide and later articles are mainly used to help individuals familiarize themselves with the use of Kali Linux systems and some of the tool software. Exercise caution when using tools under Kali, because improper use of some of these tools will cause computer system damage. Please use the information contained in all Kali series articles in a legal way.

System Requirements

The Kali system has some basic hardware requirements and suggestions. You can configure higher Configurations Based on your purpose. In this article, we assume that the reader wants to install kali as the only operating system on the computer.

1. At least 10 GB of disk space. We strongly recommend that you allocate more storage space.
2. At least 512 MB of memory; more memory is needed, especially in the graphic interface.
3. Supports USB or CD/DVD boot.
4. Kali Linux ISO image https://www.kali.org/downloads /.

Use the dd command to create a USB Boot Tool

This article assumes that you can use a USB device to boot the installation system. Use a 4 GB or 8 gb usb device whenever possible, and all data on the device will be deleted. The author of this article encountered problems when using a larger USB device during installation, but other people should still be able. In any case, the following installation steps will clear data from the USB device. Make sure to back up all data before you start. The USB boot device used to install the Kali Linux system will be created on another machine.

The first step is to obtain the ISO image file of the Kali Linux system. This guide will use the latest version of Kali Linux containing the Enlightenment desktop environment for installation.
Enter the following command on the terminal to obtain the ISO image file of this version.

$ cd ~/Downloads$ wget -c http://cdimage.kali.org/kali-2016.2/kali-linux-e17-2016.2-amd64.iso

The above two Commands will download the ISO image file of Kali Linux to the Downloads directory of the current user.

The next step is to write the ISO image to the USB device to start the installation program. We can use the dd command in Linux to complete this operation. First, the USB device can be found under the lsblk command.

Determine the name of the USB device as/dev/sdc. You can use the dd tool to write the Kali system image to the USB device.

$ sudo dd if=~/Downloads/kali-linux-e17-2016.2-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdc

Note: The preceding Command requires the root permission. Therefore, use the sudo command or log on with the root account to execute the command. This command will delete all data from the USB device. Make sure you have backed up the required data.

Once the ISO image file is completely copied to the USB device, you can install the Kali Linux system.

1. First, insert the USB device to the computer where the Kali operating system is to be installed, and then boot the system from the USB device. Once the system is successfully started from the USB device, you will see the following graphic interface, select the "Install" or "Graphical Install" option.

This Guide uses the "Graphical Install" Method for installation.

2. The following interfaces will ask the user to select the region settings, such as the language, country, and keyboard layout.

After the selection is complete, the system prompts the user to enter the host name and domain name information. Enter the appropriate environment information and click "continue installation.

3. After the Host Name and domain name are set, you need to set the password of the root user. Do not forget the password.

4. After the password is set, the installation step will prompt you to select the time zone and stay on the hard disk partition page.

If Kali Linux is the only operating system on this computer, the simplest option is to Use "Guided-Use Entire Disk", and then select the storage device to install Kali.

5. Next, you will be prompted to partition the storage device. In most cases, we can install the entire system in one partition.

6. The last step is to prompt the user to write all the changes to the host hard disk. Note: After you click OKClear all data on the entire disk.

7. Once the partition change is confirmed, the installation package will install the copied file. After installation, you need to set up a network image source to obtain the software package and system updates. If you want to use the Kali software library, make sure this function is enabled.

8. After selecting the network image source, the system will ask you to install the Grub boot program. Again, this document assumes that only the unique Kali Linux operating system is installed on your computer.

Select "Yes" on the screen. You need to select the hard disk boot device to write boot program information.

9. After Grub is installed, the system will remind you to restart the machine to enter the newly installed Kali Linux system.

10. As this Guide uses Enlightenment as the desktop environment of the Kali Linux system, it is started to enter the shell environment by default.

Log on to the system using the root account and the password set during the installation process to run the Enlightenment desktop environment.

After successful logon, enter the startx command to enter the Enlightenment desktop environment.

When you enter the Enlightenment desktop environment for the first time, it will ask the user to configure some preferences and then run the desktop environment.
