Preface

In October 2014, I was lucky enough to pass Facebook's e-face interview, attended the on-site interview at Palo Alto, and finally got the offer. There are a lot of things to record during this period for memo. At the time of preparation, we found that there were very few materials and sharing about Facebook interview experiences in China. Therefore, I would like to share my experience with you in a recorded manner so that more Chinese people can become part of Facebook! The entire record will be divided into three parts: interview process, interview questions, induction process and preparation of life. In the first two parts, I try to describe them objectively to avoid mistakes. If not, I need to reduce subjective understanding.

My job is MySQL Database Administrator, which is relatively unpopular. To make the audience wider, I try my best to describe the experience of programmers and other IT jobs that can be tried out in interviews. Basic Requirements

Let's take a look at the hard conditions needed to become a potential employee candidate for Facebook. The requirements are much simpler than you think:

Education level:Because the undergraduate transcript is displayed when you apply for a work visa after obtaining the offer. Therefore, a bachelor's degree is the lowest requirement.

Professional experience:There are no hard certificate requirements for relevant fields. Of course, if you do not have an internal push channel, you can have a certificate to increase the chance of being cited by the resume filter.

Technical Experience:Whether or not the system capable of maintaining and designing Facebook servers is an important check point. Of course, you do not need to experience such a large amount of experience (after all, there are not many such companies ).

Family:"One person Offer, benefiting the whole family" is my summary of Facebook Relocation. Facebook considers your family (spouse and children) as a whole in all stages after obtaining the Offer. Therefore, as long as the support of family members is supported, the family members will not be involved in employment.

Before going to Facebook, overseas bloggers had never been abroad except for a self-help honeymoon tour. It also proves that there is no hard requirement in this regard. I personally think that life is like learning to swim, throwing it into the water, and so on.

Stage 1: Online Application

Actually, my cenalulu was scheduled to go to San Francisco at the end of September 2014. In the beginning, I tried to give it a try, and thought that I could save my ticket money in case of an on-site interview, I used Linkedin to find several Silicon Valley companies that are recruiting MySQL DBAs. I have selected several giants to submit their resumes, including Google, EA, Apple, Linkedin, Twitter, and Facebook (hereinafter referred to as FB ). Sadly, only FB has passed the resume screening and received an email reply. Later, I learned from my friends who have worked in these companies that haitou's resume is indeed a relatively inefficient method. It is very likely that the subsequent interview opportunity will be lost because the keyword matching on the resume is unsuccessful. Therefore, it is not surprising that the first round of passing rate is so sad. They strongly suggest that if you want to stand out from the resume screening of a Silicon Valley company, you should try your best to find the company's employees for internal push. {: Style = "color: red "}

However, compared with domestic companies, the better job done by the Silicon Valley giants is that, whether your resume is approved or not, you will receive an email within two days. In addition, make sure that you are ready before the entire interview application process. Because the efficiency of FB is very high, it takes only two or three days from the network application to the first electrical surface. Once the customs clearance fails, it takes at least half a year to cool down the next application.

Stage 1: electrical surface

After connecting several emails with HR, we agreed on the telephone interview time. Due to the time difference, the interview is scheduled at Beijing time. Facebook's working hours are from AM to AM, and the corresponding Beijing time is from AM to am the next day, the time difference is reduced from 16 hours to 15 hours. For Chinese applicants, there are two options for the interview time: one is staying up till the early morning, and the other is getting up early. As the blogger was still in the former company, it was not a safe choice to interview the company at a.m. Therefore, the telephone interview times are fixed in the early morning.

If the job goes smoothly, there will be a total of 3-4 Electric planes (I have performed 3 times, and the specific quantity is determined based on the job requirements and interview quality ). The electrical surface is eliminated directly. The electric interview result directly determines that you can enter the next round (not the average score for multiple interviews ). Therefore, special attention should be paid to each round of electrical surface. Each time the electrical surface time is controlled within 45 minutes, the technical electrical surface will take 45 minutes regardless of whether the problem is completed. You can choose either a phone call (called by the interviewer's landline) or skype. We recommend that you use a mobile phone. The quality of Skype calls is unstable. I used both of them during the electrical surface process. In contrast, the telephone experience is better, because you can review the phone content after recording it. In front of every power call, I will stay in a quiet room half an hour in advance and warm up with some simple drills. Then make sure that the phone is smooth, the headset volume is OK, and Skype is online. Generally, the interviewer calls me on time. The error between my three E-plane calls and the specified time is no more than 5 minutes! This is part of FB's rigorous recruitment style. English is used for all electrical surfaces. At the beginning of each electric interview, the interviewer will have a brief self-introduction, and will give a detailed introduction to the time and content of this telephone interview for about 5 minutes. This part is an excellent step for you to adapt to the interviewer's accent. I'm lucky. All electrical surfaces are English native speaker. First electrical surface

The first electric surface is Recruiter (HR ). In the entire recruitment process, apart from the technical Examiner, he is your only contact person. So leaving a good impression on him is certainly the first step to success. After a simple process is introduced, I will be asked to introduce myself. Then, based on several job experiences related to the position you apply for, you will be asked a few non-technical questions. Then, a question and answer session will be conducted for objective basic questions. An objective basic question is a question that has the only standard answer. For example, what is the HTTP port on Linux? MySQL and Linux have 20 basic questions each. Recruiter will not tell you whether the answer is correct or not. Therefore, the answer can be corrected before the answer ends. I fixed it once. After all 40 questions are answered, the interviewer will tell you the correct answers. I was wrong at the time. The interviewer suggested that the score should be sufficient for me to enter the next round of interview (I am not sure about the pass ). Q & A is the answer. I asked two routine questions, one about the position itself and the other about the company culture. Finally, I would like to thank each other and wait until the interviewer hangs up.

Second electrical surface

The second electrical plane is the coding technical plane, hosted by employees in the future team. The form of coding technology is that within 45 minutes, the interviewer will give four technical questions for the interviewer to answer questions on Stypi. Stypi is an online collaborative code editing website. That is, your real-time code writing and modification are displayed on the interviewer's side (it can be understood that it is a Web-based Remote Desktop ). Each question is pasted in the editing area through Stypi, and then the respondent performs coding in the editing area. After each question, if you feel that the question is unclear or ambiguous, you can ask the interviewer. After each question is answered, if the interviewer decides whether there are obvious bugs or low efficiency, it will propose a solution for the respondent to modify the question or dictate the Improvement Plan (depending on the time schedule ).

Third electrical surface

Because you are applying for the MySQL Database Administrator, you must have an interview with the MySQL technology. The third is an interview with another colleague from the future. This round of interview is in the form of Q & A, so no computer is used. From a simple perspective, I learned some basic knowledge about MySQL. At the same time, I will give in-depth questions based on my resume and project experience.

Fourth electrical surface

Originally, In the first electrical surface, Recruiter mentioned that there would be a total of four-wheel electrical surfaces, and the fourth round of electrical surface was a fault troubleshooting drill. It may be the reason for the Progress (because it is only a week before I leave for San Francisco), or maybe the previous study has already achieved the goal. Recruiter emailed me, and then I went directly to the Palo Alto headquarters for an interview. Bravo!

Stage 1 On-site interview

After the on-site interview qualification is confirmed, the interviewer will confirm the specific interview time. Meanwhile, ask the candidate to apply for an entry visa. I skipped this step because I had a visa for B1/B2 in my previous overseas plan. Generally, the U.S. visa period is more than two weeks, including material preparation, submission, embassy visa, and passport delivery. According to the subsequent experience, all these processes will be followed by the customer's designated agency BAL. Therefore, the entire process will be very worry-free and user-friendly!

Due to my personal arrangement, tickets and accommodation are handled by myself. In fact, according to the FB policy, the round-trip fare and accommodation fee for all interviews are all-inclusive. According to the later experience, the ticket will be placed by the designated proxy CWT of FB on behalf of the business class standard. The hotel is a five-star hotel with a maximum length of three days, namely, the eve of the interview, the day of the interview and the adjusted day after the interview. The money for both parts is paid by FB. In addition, FB allows reimbursement of living expenses incurred during the interview, at $150 per day. Includes: Taxi fare, meals, and basic necessities for returning to and from the hotel airport. Within one month after the interview, the system uploads an invoice (Receipt) and transfers the fee to the subject by bank transfer. Therefore, it is best to have a bank card that supports international remittance (with swift code) in advance.

Interview day

The interview is scheduled at AM on Hacker Way Site. Take the hotel's direct car and arrive at the FB headquarters early. Register the visitor at the front-end and wait for about 10 minutes for my interface Recruiter to pick me up. As he visited the campus earlier, he took me to visit the campus. Of course, he could not show more than a dozen restaurants proud of FB. Then I grabbed a cup of coffee in a break room and went to the interview room. The so-called interview room is the meeting room with a book for one day in advance, the candidates will be interviewed throughout the day.

The on-site interview is five rounds in total, with each round strictly controlled at 45 minutes (the answer is over, and the chat continues when there is no answer), with one interviewer in each round. According to my current situation and previous experiences, the five rounds of division of labor are clear, respectively: coding, hands-on experience, future manager, future teamate, and future team members. As we will focus on the process today, I will give a rough picture of the preference of each person in the interview questions. The specific interview questions will be shared in subsequent blog posts.

Coding part:It is roughly the same as the previous e-question type, but the form becomes the famous white-board coding of FB, that is, writing code on a large white board. That is to say: no highlight! No automatic completion is provided! Children's shoes that rely heavily on IDE may be tight when they are not prepared.

Practical experience: as I interviewed MYSQL DBA, the content is closely related to the internal principles of MySQL. According to the Recruiter statement, you cannot wait until you find the Knowledge Boundary ). In general, this side will be carried out by technical experts. The format is the pseudo code of the Q & A + whiteboard.

Future manager:0.5 humanities + 0.5 technology. It mainly examines the team cooperation capabilities, as well as the difficulties encountered in some of the past projects and how to solve them. If you do not lie on your resume and have rich practical experience, it will be very easy.

Future teamate:Full technology, the depth of this part will not be as deep as that of technical experts. I guess this is not only a double check of technical competence, but also to ensure that candidates can communicate well with future colleagues.

Future team members:This part mainly examines the degree of knowledge being touched. For example, as a MySQL DBA, it is necessary to understand Linux-related knowledge. For programmer, it is also necessary to understand some product design principles or front-end knowledge. In addition, we also examine some cross-team communication skills.

Since the interview started in the morning, it is an one-hour lunch break after the first two sides. Of course, this is the time to adjust the status of FB luxury meals. Recruiter told me at the time that the most annoying day is the lunch time, because "which canteen to eat, what to eat" is the most difficult problem. To this end, they also have an APP to display the meals menu provided by each canteen on the same day, ORZ...

After the interview is completed throughout the day, Recruiter will ask you if you want to continue. Otherwise, they will leave the campus and complete the interview for one day.

Interview results

There will be a candidate PK meeting around Friday of the interview Week, and each interviewer will express his or her opinion. At this meeting, there will be a conclusion on whether the candidate has passed. I received the employment result about five days after the interview. Later, Recruiter will draft an offer to talk about the salary (I will not talk about the specific salary, if you want to know a general industry standard, you can go to Glassdoor), confirm the email, and follow the process. After the Offer is done, start the relocation project. All the questions you can think of related to relocation. FB has a designated proxy to help you. It is very thoughtful! For example: visa, migration and shipping, temporary foothold, air tickets, etc. I will also update the relocation of Chinese people and their lives abroad in my later blog posts.

Tips

If you want to participate in the FB e-face/interview, the following are some notes that I personally need to pay attention:

· Never write any previous or unclear knowledge in your resume. Any information may be viewed on the electrical surface.

· Keep your email address available during application. We recommend that you check for new emails every day.

· It is recommended that the electrical environment be quiet, the temperature is appropriate, and the telephone signal is good.

· Prepare a microphone headset on the electrical panel (just call the headset on a general mobile phone ).

· Ensure sufficient Cell Phone Power
