Cinnamon and Mate are based on the GNOME2 classic desktop and used as the default desktop of Linux Mint. Cinnamon 2.2.0 and Mate 1.8 will be used as the default desktop environment for Linux Mint 17 Qiana, which were released a few weeks ago (now only used as the default desktop for Linux Mint 17 RC ).

If you like the two desktops, follow the tutorial below to install them.
Cinnamon 2.2.0 has PPA available, so it is very easy for users to install. Open the terminal and enter the following command:
Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get install cinnamon
Restart the system and select Cinnamon on the welcome page.
Install Mate 1.8. Use the following command to install the SDK through a third-party Library:
