Freeing memory and caching methods under Linux


$ free-m


Run sync to write the contents of the cache back to the hard drive

$ sync


# Format: Sync

Forces the file buffer content in memory to be written to disk.


Clean up the free cache by modifying the drop_caches of the proc system

$ echo 3 >/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

$ free-m


Clear page Cache only (Pagecache)

# echo 1 >/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

Clear Catalog Items and Inode

# echo 2 >/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

Clear page cache, directory entries, and inode

# echo 3 >/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches


0– not release

-Free Page Cache

-Release file node cache and directory item cache

3– Release All Caches
