從 5.1 版本開始，PowerShell 在具有不同功能集和平台相容性的不同版本中可用。

案頭版：基於 .NET Framework 而構建，相容面向在 Windows 完整佔用空間版本（例如，Server Core 和 Windows Desktop）上啟動並執行 PowerShell 版本的指令碼和模組。

核心版：基於 .NET Core 而構建，相容面向在 Windows 佔用空間減小版本（例如，Nano Server 和 Windows IoT）上啟動並執行 PowerShell 版本的指令碼和模組。

當前啟動並執行 PowerShell 版本顯示在 $PSVersionTable 的 PSEdition 屬性中。

預設情況下，Nano Server 在所有 Nano Server 安裝中都包括 PowerShell Core。 PowerShell Core 是基於 .NET Core 構建的 PowerShell 佔用空間減小版本，且在佔用空間減小版本的 Windows（例如，Nano Server 和 Windows IoT Core）上運行。 PowerShell Core 與其他 PowerShell 版本（例如 Windows Server 2016 上啟動並執行 Windows PowerShell）運行方式相同。 然而，Nano Server 佔用空間減少意味著不是所有 Windows Server 2016 中的 PowerShell 功能都在 Nano Server 上的 PowerShell Core 中可用。

結合使用 Windows PowerShell Desired State Configuration 與 Nano Server

可以使用 Windows PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC) 將 Nano Server 作為目標節點來管理。 目前，僅可以在請求模式下管理使用 DSC 運行 Nano Server 的節點。 並非所有 DSC 功能都與 Nano Server 正常運行。
