After adding the following code to the/ETC/VIM/VIMRC, restart Vim to create 4 spaces by pressing TAB:

set tabstop=4 set softtabstop=4 set shiftwidth=4 set expandtab set number set autoindent  

which

    • TabStop: Represents the length of a tab that shows how many spaces are, by default, 8.
    • Softtabstop: Indicates the length of the indent when pressing the backspace bar while in edit mode, especially useful when using Expandtab.
    • Shiftwidth: Indicates the length of each level of indentation, generally set to be the same as softtabstop.
    • Expandtab, indentation with an empty glyd representation
    • Set number is used to display line numbers
    • Autoindent: Indicates automatic indentation
