Why is it that Java is a cross-platform

Mainly because of a core of things, the JVM (Java Virttual Machine), and the Java virtual machines

However, the JVM on all platforms is different, but the interface that each JVM provides to the compiler is the same.

class file, a compiled bytecode file. So the compiler just needs to generate bytecode files on the line, as for running on different platforms

This is given to the JVM on the different platforms to handle.
