Recently, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed a core cloud computing use case that focuses on cloud management, portability, interoperability, and security, making its contribution to the definition of open standards for cloud computing. In addition, NIST hopes to accelerate this standard release process by developing a test case based on a common cloud system specification, in collaboration with the cloud provider. This work can serve as a reference for organizations dedicated to cloud computing standards, such as the recently launched Opencloudinitiative.

The United States Government's Alliance cloud Computing Strategy decided to adopt and promote cloud computing through its federal agencies, and NIST follows this policy and is responsible for defining the road map used by the cloud. The roadmap includes recommendations for cloud computing open standards (support use cases). The first version of the NIST standard road map for cloud computing describes the requirements for standards, portability, interoperability, and security in the cloud, as well as the existing standards and current status/market acceptance. At the same time, NIST maintains a number of standards and contribution organizations.

Specifically, the document identifies 5 candidate areas for cloud standards:

• Management API

• Data Interchange Format

Federatedidentity and Securitypolicyapi

• Resource Description

• Data Storage API

The documentation describes some of the cloud business use cases in these areas and their dependencies, as well as the potential criteria that are being developed for filling gaps. These use cases include maintaining data objects in the cloud, moving virtual machines/devices in the cloud, and single sign-on access to multiple clouds.

Microsoft is the first cloud vendor to collaborate with NIST, demonstrating windowsazure support for these use cases. Its collaborators, Soyatec, provides test-driven code. To provide further support for interoperability, they also used Azure's Java open Source SDK to write tests.
