September 1, 2014--business security technology leader Blue Coat Systems announced today that 71% of Web site host names (hostnames) only appear 24 hours. While the vast majority of these "day trips" host names play an important role in the sharing and delivery of Internet content, they also provide cover for malicious activity, such as communication with infected systems. The Blue coat Security Lab released its latest report, "Day Tour" hosts: How malware hides itself in short-lived sites, detailing the nature and activities of these "short-lived" sites, and helping us better understand the potential security implications of sites that have less than 24 hours of time. The biggest drivers of "day-trip" websites include key internet companies such as Google, Amazon and Yahoo, and web optimization companies that help accelerate content delivery. Blue Coat also found that the "Day trip" site 10 big push hands have one is the most popular pornographic site. Of the 50 parent domains that use the most frequent day trips site, 22% is malicious. These domains use short-lived web sites to drive attacks and manage botnets, using "knowledge and unknown" sites to invade security solutions. For example, day trips sites can be used to build dynamic command-and-control architectures that are extensible, difficult to attack, and easy to implement. They can also be used to create unique subdomains for each spam message to avoid being detected by spam or network filters. "While most ' day trips ' sites are critical and not malicious to legitimate internet activities, a large number of such sites create the perfect environment for malicious activity," said Tim van der Horst, senior threat researcher at Blue Coat Systems. The rapid construction and disappearance of knowledge and unknown sites has shaken many existing security controls. Understanding what these sites are and how they are used is critical to improving security. "Day Trip" websites are particularly popular among cyber criminals because they: · Let security solutions keep guessing: Dynamic domain names are more difficult to block than static domain names. · Submerged security solution: Generate a large number of domain names, so that a certain proportion of domain names are more likely to be ignored by security controls. · Dodge Security Solutions: By simply consolidating day-trips sites and encrypting and running inbound malware and/or outbound data theft via SSL. Businesses often do not see attacks, which can affect their ability to prevent, detect, and respond. As businesses continue to withstand cyber attacks, they can learn valuable lessons and further enhance security, including: · Security controls must obtain automated real-time intelligence to discover these "day tours" sites and assign risk levels. Static or slow defenses are not enough to protect user and company data. · Policy-based security controls must be able to prevent malicious attacks based on real-time intelligence. Blue Coat Researchers analyzed 75 million global users who visited more than 660 million stand-alone host names within 90 days. They found that 71% of the host name, or 470 million, is a "day trip" site, just for one days.
