EMC Executive Vice President Sanjay Mirchandani
EMC Executive Vice President Sanjay Mirchandani brings a keynote address called "Building a platform for next generation cloud computing and large data applications." He parsed from a user's perspective, from a CIO's perspective, for us: massive data, not analysis of 100% of data. We have to choose, to find the right data for analysis, and we believe that the amount of data produced in the world is very large, an urgent need for analysis, and must be effective analysis.
He also said that future cloud computing platforms would use a highly automated, large-scale operation to quickly develop and integrate new applications that can store and analyze large amounts of data and get a large number of events and respond in real time. Understand how the cloud age infrastructure will evolve, to adapt to the Internet and its pervasive remote sensing and machine-generated data, large data and fast data structures, and understand how software-defined data centers and software-defined storage will provide greater efficiency, control, choice, and agility for enterprise IT.
The following is a transcript of the speech:
Sanjay Mirchandani: Good morning, first of all, on behalf of EMC, I would like to thank the organizers for giving me an opportunity to speak here, and today we are talking about changes in the IT era. My speech will have a lot of big data and cloud computing, but my perspective is the practitioner's perspective. Our company has a total of 16,500 employees worldwide, so we know that all the clouds make 99.9% of their employees feel so important that each of them becomes a CIO, and that changes our IT environment, which means that the environmental changes driven by Yu Yun are not the same as they were a few years ago, whether it's business, Economic or technical, we all see a cloud that has a great effect and impact.
I think from a point of view, that is, compression. We know that all the industries are under a lot of pressure, no matter in which country is facing the pressure, that is, the pressure you have to provide more value, you must quickly put the market, speed up research and development, shorten the time to put the product on the market. If we want to achieve this goal, we need to change it in real time. And we know that for the data, we thought it was manageable, and it had to be structured, but now the data has become our lifeline, the data can make a company, it can destroy a company, and if the data is used correctly, the data can be used in a differentiated way to win the market.
Now over the past 10-15 years, there have been some very disruptive changes in the IT world, both for consumers and practitioners alike. I think there are four major changes in technology:
The first is mobile technology, now everyone uses mobile phones, and everyone is online every day, followed by cloud computing, cloud data and social. Without a credible platform, all of the big data and social services are impossible to achieve, because we have to promote these four technologies in a managed environment.
The business challenges we face: First of all, facing cost challenges in it, we need to achieve economies of scale and achieve both of these goals, while reducing the risk of business. What is the crisis facing an IT company? If we do not apply the cloud will not be able to achieve technological innovation, not the use of large data can not achieve this goal, without the use of large data can not meet the emerging data needs.
Basically, the cloud fundamentally changed the delivery patterns and ways of it, from the perspective of the production line, when you build the cloud facilities and architecture, you can provide different services, different products on this basis, that is, for you to engage in business is very critical, that is, the cloud has fundamentally changed the IT landscape. On the other hand, an IDC survey conducted in 2000-2012 led us to believe that users of the Internet would turn back many times, but it employees grew by only 1%, meaning we had to expand it capabilities to deliver greater it delivery capabilities with fewer people.
Now we are in the virtualization of the server, in fact, the virtualization of the server can make the world's companies more use of the cloud, and now this value has reached 10 billion dollars, through the use of cloud we can create 10 billion of dollars worth. At the same time we know that the most important thing about virtualization is standardization and deep virtualization. In other words, every company should be virtualized as much as possible, and we have to be fully automated, automation is a pillar, automation is the automation of radiation, not a point of automation, that is to say, server virtualization is to drive the IT landscape is an important enabler. So we believe that virtualization means more automation.
We can look at an example of what the relationship is between a server and other elements, such as the need for networking and storage in a data center. But for a company, they can cost 60.07 trillion of dollars in this area, which is why we need to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs.
The server needs to be highly intelligent and virtualized, and to create a highly intelligent center based on this, your cost does not need to increase, the manpower also does not need to improve can increase the value, the creation ability, when you use the virtualization, is the server to virtualize, the result can realize the intelligence of the information. The intelligence of information can penetrate more virtual level, and can improve the ability of computing.
We believe that the intelligence of information is very important, it is related to software, we used to call it a software-led information terminal, in the next few years will change the data Center architecture, operation and development trends, we can think about how to improve efficiency, real cost reduction. You can standardize across the entire organization, which requires abstraction and virtualization, virtualization of the architecture, and sharing of them, and ultimately aggregation for unified automation.
But the core of this process is the virtual layer, abstraction, automation, and sharing, which is the most important three principles of data center. What we need now is virtualization, and the automation of this software process, in the data center, we believe that the data will change the operation of the data center mode, and change the enterprise usage patterns. This is where we need to expand, and there is no increase in costs in the area of expansion.
How the software finds the storage point, we know that storage is actually related to the server, what you do is to abstract your resources into a pool of resources, the pool of resources to make a unified automation, of course, this automation is the unification of certain rules, this rule is based on your workload and load to determine, Not all of the data has commercial value, we are building a platform, the platform can create a corresponding workload, on which can build an automated rule. In fact, what you need to reduce is data transfer or localized processing, that is, we have to find the nearest place to this data, or store the nearest place for analysis and processing, he can be based on APA, or based on data processing, people's entire workflow is open.
EMC's own IT architecture, in fact, a few years ago we did a transformation of the architecture, the main task was to build a framework. This architecture is both virtual and standardized, and the so-called standardization is primarily the standardization of IT applications, and we know that 15% was virtualized at that time in 2008, and that the company was worth 8 billion and the staff was 24000, and by 2012 things had changed. Our virtualization level has reached 90%, our servers are 9000, and a large percentage of them are critical business processes, so we have to use the virtualization process to allocate our efficiency.
We can see whether this service is a test or a product when we provide the service, and we can see that the delivery of the product is reduced from a few months, days to a few minutes, or hours. So you see this is the glamour of automation that really reduces the time it takes to deliver a product. From the CIO's point of view, speed and data increased flexibility, and in the shortest possible time we provide customized services.
How many percent of IT support is spent on innovation? And how many percentages are spent on legacy systems? In 2004, 20% of the budget was spent on research and development, and only a small part of it was spent on maintenance, but now this data has been reversed, that is, 40% is spent on maintenance, and in fact the data has been posted on our company's official web site. This is the work on effectiveness that I mentioned.
We know that cloud computing is really improving our efficiency and changing our business model, and everyone is talking about big data, but what does big data mean to us? Change our business model, we know that in some business models the customer tells us that we need to use some data to do the following things, now what needs to be done is not excessive engineering, we know that large data has its own value and meaning, speed, and we also need to quickly access data, That means we have to do real time, or approximate real-time access, and structured and semi-structured data, and when you communicate with customers you have to talk about value, you have to tell them what the big data can bring to us. The value that the data can provide is astonishing, in fact the data we produce today is the data generated over the past year, and it can be thought that the data produced in the year 2000 can be produced today, a massive explosion of the volume of data.
Large-scale data, of course, do not analyze the absolute data, we need to find the right data for a selected analysis. And we believe that the current data production is very large, so the need for analysis, must be effective analysis. Because of our business and business environment generated data, whether it is transaction data, CRM data, marketing data and customer data, of course, also need to buy some data to the third party, now these data can not be analyzed, to construct low-cost data.
Social data and video data, and so on, and some telemetry data, such as some of the search engine data, all of which have their place, and they have some quick speed that we need to consider, before I talk big data to simplify the data by understanding where their value lies, Consider how big the data is. So when it comes to the next level, we need to understand the value of your customers, both externally and internally, to gain a better insight into operations, because operations are important to our efficiency and resource allocation, which is a topic of great concern to us, and we want to develop new growth fundamentals, For example, you have a business opportunity how to use large data, you can increase your growth, how to use data to grow, while maintaining the competitive advantage.
Before we talk about how to make your own competitive advantage, this is from the inside will have a very good result, first of all is to put different resources together, for large data is to change our business, the cloud is to our IT operations.
Recently there is a report on the third platform, the first platform has thousands of users, the second platform has millions of users and million applications and so they have their own content. The third platform is a minimal, largest platform with hundreds of applications and billions of users, this is what we call the third platform, the infrastructure we build today, the operations centers we build are developed on a third platform, and the third platform we talked about has billions of users and hundreds of applications, This is the biggest platform.
What this slide says is that the third platform has a different business model, different business models, if we look at an engine telemetry data, we take it as a point of large data, which may change one of our aircraft operations, and we can make a marketing decision based on its cost. McKinsey has a report that video distributes 1/3 of the traffic, which is the third platform, and such a model is a new model for us.
These applications have new ways of creating for the third platform, the new structure is not the same as before, the next generation of analysis is based on data, we will have some modern programming framework, but also to realize how some of the current equipment maintenance, for a lot of data they have some new systems, But how do these systems deal with these operating systems at the moment? And we can do it in a affordable way when we deploy, like you might choose one, or choose a lot of cloud computing architecture, with a third platform, we see a lot of new ways to build, some subversive business model, We can see that delivering a real, and indeed a structure that can meet the maximum user base, is very easy to deploy, and with modern programming tools and data development, is a lot of very flexible data.
Our EMC company has been operating in the Chinese market for 16 years and is committed to the development of the Chinese market.
