Internet users are more likely to pay for online entertainment, but are unwilling to pay for Internet news, according to a survey by Nielsen, a research firm, released recently. Nielsen surveyed 27,000 consumers in 52 countries around the world and found that netizens were more likely to pay for movies, games and music. Nearly 60% of respondents said they were willing to pay for movies and music, while more than 50% offered to pay for the game. By contrast, the proportion of willing to pay for Internet news is only more than 30%. The findings suggest that the New York Times's recently announced fee-charging strategy may not be sensible. The New York Times announced last month that, starting in 2011, online readers are free to read a certain number of articles a month, paying more than a ration. Also, News Corp CEO Rupert Rupert Murdoch has said it plans to charge its news sites in the middle of the year.
