The Census and Statistics Department released the provisional estimate of the value of total retail sales in April 09 at $21.7 billion, down 4.4% per cent, less than the market's expected 6.9% per cent, and the volume of retail sales after the deduction of price changes by 5.5% over the year.　　The revision of the value of total retail sales in March was estimated at $20.8 billion, down 7.7% per year, while the volume of total sales decreased by 9.2%. Analysed by main types of stores, sales of motor vehicles and spare parts decreased by 34% in volume in April, followed by clothing (12.8%%), furniture and fixtures (9.7%%), and sales of miscellaneous consumer durables increased by 5.9%.
