Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform is on the New Year's Day, and Microsoft is now planning to launch an additional security architecture for a multi-tenant Cloud environment later in 2010, as well as private cloud software based on the same technology used by Azure.
Microsoft Chief Software Engineer Ray Ozzie a keynote address at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC 09), Ozzie announced the official release date of Windows Azure, the Microsoft Cloud computing operating system, and introduced a new data services technology, "Dallas" (Dallas), The new cloud computing security mechanism "Sydney" (Sydney).
Azure Senior Architect Hasan Alkhatib this Thursday at the Microsoft New England Research and Development Center Xconomy Forum, the code code-named "Sydney" security plan. In addition to embedding stronger security into the public cloud, Alkhatib says, Microsoft plans to help users build private cloud networks in their own data centers, using the same software that Azure is based on.
Microsoft revealed the Sydney plan in professional Developers conference last month, when he mentioned security in virtualized, multi-tenant environments, where users often shared data center resources in such environments.
Sydney separates the user's cloud resources from the network virtualization, providing a secure connection between the enterprise's internal data center devices and the devices in the cloud. Sydney will be able to aggregate "any two terminals", including servers and customer devices within the enterprise, as well as resources in public cloud services such as Azure, to create Alkhatib's so-called "Virtual network overlay Architecture", and it is secure in IPSec and allows authorized users access.
However, compliance in cloud computing remains a major challenge. The IT industry must convince organizations to accept new security specifications based on logic rather than on physical structures.
Microsoft did not release Sydney's specific release date, but said it would launch a beta version at least in 2010. In addition, private cloud products based on Azure will be available in 2010.
Today, Microsoft is running Azure in its data centers in Chicago and Texas, and will start using Azure in more data centers in Dublin, Amsterdam, Singapore and Hong Kong next January.
Microsoft released the Community Technology Preview version of Windows Azure cloud computing operating system at last year's PDC conference, which can still be used by the end of this year, and Ray Ozzie announced that Windows Azure will be officially listed on January 1, 2010, Microsoft will test and refine the pay system next January, and users can start using Windows Azure Services in February.
Ozzie says there are already tens of thousands of developers using Windows Azure, which will have at least two data centers all over the world to provide data support for Windows Azure starting next January. In the United States, Azure data centers are located in Chicago, San Antonio, Texas, respectively. In Europe, Microsoft has a data center in Dublin and Amsterdam, and Asia's data centers are set up in Singapore and in Hong Kong.
Ozzie also announced a new Azure subsystem, code-named Dallas, is an open directory and environment for data, and azure users can access different business and public datasets. Security Sydney can help enterprise users exchange data between servers and azure clouds, starting next year to test the dialogue between local applications and cloud computing programs, helping enterprise users run most applications on Microsoft Data centers.
