Just days after Apple released its own content distribution network (CDN), Microsoft was exposed to register several domain names that contained CDN vocabulary. The registration of a new domain name means that either Microsoft is also preparing to launch a new CDN service or a new service around the CDN.
Domain Name Website Dot Weekly writer Jamie Zoch found that Microsoft has registered Sway.com as well as several other variations of the site that can be used for Sway, including sway-CDN.com, sway-CDN.net, sway-INT.com and sway-INT.net. All new domains are currently redirected to Bing pages where these terms are searched.
In addition, Microsoft has also registered a trademark for "Sway" for a wide variety of applications, covering computer software, computer applications, online computer software and software as a service.
Microsoft's new domain name may be or used for the following three purposes. First, Microsoft, like Apple and Netflix, may shift content to autonomous CDN services, relying less on third-party CDNs, speeding content delivery and improving and better controlling quality of service.
However, given the fact that Microsoft already has its own CDN service and then launches new CDN services, it seems that it does not make sense. Moreover, Microsoft has provided CDN as a service to developers through its Azure platform. So, it is possible that Microsoft is planning to use Sway to implement a new marketing campaign that will attract more developers to their platform, away from the platforms of companies such as Amazon. Amazon also owns its own CDN service, CloudFront.
The third guess is that Microsoft may be developing new streaming media services. Microsoft needs to launch a streaming media game service. Although Xbox currently has a Twitch built-in streaming media service, the service is basically confirmed by Google's $ 1 billion acquisition. So, that could make Microsoft rethink a streaming media game service for the Xbox.
