OpenStack may not be a market leader in the cloud, but it is the way to the cloud architecture. Open source cloud services are a strategic choice for manufacturers, from Hewlett-Packard to Cisco; for many others it is a cloud service framework, including Rackspace. Unlike Amazon's Web services Ec2,openstack, which is primarily offered as an enterprise software and public cloud service, has sparked media debate, but not just a hype. OpenStack has its own innovation, especially in the virtual network, but also in the front-end.

Like all cloud stacks, OpenStack is a set of management application interfaces (APIs) designed to control resource pools and assign them to tenants or applications. Administrators manage OpenStack through Control Panel and a set of shared services (called "glance"), enabling administrators to manage and create their images and templates. OpenStack also has three defined resource classes: computing, storage, and networking. APIs, such as Nova, Swift (object storage), and quantum, are named after they are associated with an open source project.

Understanding OpenStack Nova and Swift APIs

The Nova or OpenStack computing function is an hypervisor-agnostic framework that manages virtual machine (VM) instances and images, and then maps between them as needed. OpenStack supports bare metal boot (bare metal) or simplifies server settings for a connection resource pool, templates help create project instances on demand for users or tenants.

The user interacts with the OpenStack through the Nova API, then divides the request into a path-managed VM image, a path to the admin VM instance. Under the central Control Panel, VM images are managed through a service called glance, and VM instances are managed by queued requests for specific resource requirements.

OpenStack supports its API and AWS's resilient Computing Cloud (EC2) API, dedicated to supporting the nascent API standards. So Nova can be seen as a resource for the OpenStack public cloud, meaning that server/computing and storage resources are managed here. The components used, including the SQL database and the message bus, are open source and, in theory, OpenStack customization to support any number of options in each field.

Swift Object storage is similar to AWS's Simple Object Storage Service (S3), designed to extend to zettabytes and multiple node allocations. At the same time, Swife provides baseline functionality similar to S3, OpenStack currently does not have a relational database management system (RDBMS) or Data Warehouse extension services, both of which now exist in AWS. As a result, not all Amazon hosting services will be transferred to the OpenStack cloud.

Perhaps most of the interest in OpenStack comes from the quantum--virtual network interface. Quantum is used to provide and apply related network services based on several basic network models, such as the default gateway route levvel 2 domains.

Quantum let the network know the cloud resources, the software definition network attraction is very significant for the network operator and the business. A few people think that SDN means every application control network, one condition is so-called "network chaos". OpenStack's Quantum provides an alternative model: Cloud control and networking, coordinating links and details, such as quality of service, based on application requirements and installation strategies.

Quantum is not without this problem, which is also a broader dimension of its support. There are a number of giant-like volunteers behind the OpenStack, as well as resources to promote the project and provide documentation, but the staging of the implementation is also risky. Disagreements can lead to incompatibilities between their own versions.

Quantum's second problem is operations. Greater cloud commitment makes it more difficult to create applications in the cloud and transfer images between resources. VMware has made cloud operations its main focus and differentiator, but at the same time DevOps projects and OpenStack, DevOps is not an integral part of the project, nor is there a separate sanction approach. As a result, OpenStack may lag behind in complex operations, or a variety of incompatible methods may be developed to further partition the OpenStack platform, hindering development and deployment.

Now, OpenStack has an inherent technical agenda and enjoys extensive support from hardware and software participants. Because it is open source, technology has no cost and ensures early market attraction. If OpenStack continues to strengthen and improve at the current pace, it is likely that OpenStack will become the biggest threat to AWS.
