Now a start-up company called Qnovo is using software to improve charging. According to MIT, with Qnovo's charging management software, smartphones can be recharged up to 1/3 faster, and battery life can be extended by a factor of one. This technology is expected to be rolled out on some phones next year.
When charging a lithium-ion battery, the adapter will move the lithium ions from the anode to the cathode at a constant frequency until it fills. But over time due to the lithium ion movement caused by lithium plating (lithium ion binding) and other problems will cause the battery to become aging. The battery life is shortened if the charging power is increased to speed up the charging process.
After using Qnovo technology, the Qnovo software sends a pulse to the cell phone battery when the device is connected to the adapter. The voltage response from the battery can provide the software with the status information of the battery, such as the current temperature, the past charging method, etc., so that the Qnovo can determine the safe charging capacity. You can also charge as fast as possible to minimize battery degradation.
The software keeps this check on the battery and adjusts the charge as needed. The Qnovo also adjusts to the battery's properties as time changes. MIT reported that if the normal 5V adapter charge 15 minutes to talk 1.5 hours, the same power-on time Qnovo can extend the call duration to 3-6 hours. It can also delay battery aging.
In addition to the software to improve the charging speed, Qnovo also provides a charging chip, mobile phone installed on the chip and its charging speed can even faster. Qnovo CEO Nadim Maluf is expected to apply to some phones next year. Talks with unnamed manufacturing are underway to pre-Qnovo the software into a mobile phone and even implant a chip to manage the charging process for better performance.
However, in addition to charging, users also have a concern about the battery, that is, capacity. Maluf's view is that capacity may not be a big problem after the charge is accelerated, because no electricity can be filled quickly. I do not agree with this, if it is in a place where electricity can be charged, charging quickly and slowly I do not care, but if there is no power to charge it? Therefore, this technology has always been a palliative, the key is to improve the battery capacity, or capacity density.
