Can XForms and Ajax come together?

W3C released the second version of XForms this month and recommended it as "next-generation Web forms". The question that arises is how XForms will adapt to the hot Web development field such as Ajax?

W3C believes that the advantage of XForms is to minimize interaction with the server and reduce the need for scripts. This sounds like a challenge to Ajax.

But are XForms similar to Ajax technologies or are they competing?

The answer provided by experts in the field is yes. XForms are still Ajax-related technologies that complement each other rather than compete.

"These two technologies are very different," said Ron Schmelzer, a senior analyst at ZapThink. Ajax is concerned with the presentation layer and interaction with users asynchronously. XForms only focuses on the presentation layer data set and the interaction between the client and the server ."

He believes they can work collaboratively.

"Of course, people are using Ajax to do something similar to XForms," he said. However, I think Ajax can promote XForms. Because Ajax is not a standard, but a set of different UI operations. XForms is a standard. It specifies how form-based information is represented, collected, and interacted. Let developers treat XForms as a standard and Ajax as an implementation/representation that it makes more sense to replace any one of them ."

Allan Beaufour is a member of the W3C XForms working group and an XForms consultant for the Spanish Technology Promotion Organization Fundaci ón CTIC. He agreed that XForms is a fine Web development tool set. He said the second version of XForms is better than the previous version. When the first version was released, there were not many implementations yet, but they have now been implemented. In addition, as developers start to use it, they will inevitably need its supporting tools, which have been developed successfully.

"It is better for developers who use or start using XForms," he said ." To show how it works, he cited some sample applications from the Mozilla XForms Project.

Beaufour raised a very difficult question: "When XForms can do what Ajax does and does not need scripts, which one is easier for developers to learn and implement? C # Is it really easier than Java ?"

Next, he proposed his own assessment of the technical difficulties: "It depends on the field from which you come from. If you are a standard Web developer who understands HTML and JS, Ajax is not difficult to learn. As for XForms, you need to learn some other W3C standards, such as XPath and some schemas. However, in my opinion, XForms should be simpler. You don't have to be a programmer. Because everything can be declared ."
