The original [Gaim] was officially renamed [Pidgin] on December 31, April 6, 2007. This is a big news, and the reason must be traced back to the original history of Gaim, at first, it was called "GTK + AOL Instant Messenger". Since AOL was not satisfied, it was renamed "Gaim ". Later, AOL registered "AIM" as a trademark and negotiated with the two parties. Later, when Gaim 2.0.0beta6 was released, AOL made a strong protest, while Gaim developers set up "Instant Messaging Freedom Corporation" to provide formal legal support for Gaim. This started about half a year ago. The result of the discussion is that Gaim is renamed to Pidgin. In more details, the original GTK +-based Gaim is changed to Pidgin, libgaim is changed to Purple, and gaim-text is changed to Finch. Pidgin is intentionally named.
The open-source guys are really poor. They are always under pressure for something. In fact, I really like the name gaim.
