Customized personalized UbuntuLiveCD with UCK

The benefits of Live CD are worth noting. It allows you to directly start a system without installing any software. Therefore, many Linux distributions have corresponding Live versions, so that users can experience the Linux system without installation. There are a lot of software that can make Live CD, and Ubuntu Customization Kit (UCK) is one of them, it can help you add your favorite software to Ubuntu. If you are not satisfied with the Ubuntu Live CD software, you can use UCK to customize your own Ubuntu Live CD.

To install UCK, you can use the packaged DEB package or download the source file and compile and install it yourself. The DEB package and source code package of the latest UCK version can be downloaded from SF. To use UCK, you also need to install other tools, such as fakeroot and mkisofs, which can be upgraded and installed. In addition, your home directory requires 5 GB of available space. Finally, you need to customize the Ubuntu ISO. UCK supports customizing Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu. But one thing to remember is that the version you want to customize must be consistent with your system version. For example, if you want to customize Kubuntu 8.04, your system must also be Kubuntu 8.04.

After installing UCK, you can start uck from "Application-> System Tools-> Ubuntu mizmization Kit" or enter "UCK-gui" (without double quotation marks) under the terminal. UCK was originally used to make localized Ubuntu live CD, but it can also add or remove software on Live CD and change the configuration file. Therefore, we can use it to customize our Live CD.

With UCK, you can complete the entire customization process step by step on the graphic operation interface. The first two steps are to select the language package and the language of the boot loader. You can select multiple language packs, but you can select only one language for the boot loader. Also, the language of the boot loader must be the language supported by the Ubuntu version you want to customize. Otherwise, the Live CD will prompt a failure during compilation. Step 3 is to select the desktop environment. Here you can select GNOME, KDE, XFCE, and other desktop environments. After the selection, the corresponding installation package will be automatically downloaded.

Before proceeding to the next step, UCK requires you to specify the ISO image file to be customized, and enter the name of Live CD after customization. Next, it also needs to choose whether to manually customize the CD. This step is very important. If you want to delete some files that you don't need from Ubuntu live CD to reduce the Live CD volume, in this case, you need to manually customize it.

After completing the preceding steps, the UCK will mount the ISO image and ~ Decompress the Ubuntu ISO and SquashFS images in the/tmp/directory. The duration of decompression depends on the computer performance. After all the packages are decompressed, UCK will repeat some custom scripts and the selected Language Pack ~ /Tmp/directory.

After the UCK finishes processing the Language Pack, it will display a menu for you to customize Live CD. Select the first item and you will be new. Here you can add or delete software packages and process dependencies between them. Select the second item and you will enter a terminal. This is a chrooted environment that can be customized for Live CD. Here, you can install software (which seems to be prepared by someone who prefers command line operations), or start gconf-editer here to modify the desktop and software configurations of Live CD.

You can also copy the custom files to the Live CD. To do this, you must open another terminal and enter ~ /Tmp/remaster-root/directory. This directory is the customized root directory of Live CD. The structure in this directory is the same as that in your system. Put the file you want to copy to the corresponding directory. For example, the GNOME wallpaper is in the/usr/share/backgrounds/directory, if you want to put the wallpaper in Live CD, put the wallpaper in ~ /Tmp/remaster-root/usr/share/backgrounds/directory.
