As Linux quickly replaces Unix on the server platform, Unix veterans will find many differences between Linux and Unix.

The idea behind any Unix version is that the vendor provides customers with all the complete services. In Unix environments, proprietary tools are required for software development to ensure its integrity. The Linux philosophy is that everything is open-source; the source code of any driver or software component must be open so that users can integrate them in the best way.

These two platforms seem very similar, but if you do not know many nuances and definitions between Unix and Linux, it may cause some problems.

The Linux server software list is basically absent from Unix proprietary tools. For example, a Unix administrator uses EMC's PowerPath tool to connect a redundant storage area network (SAN) to a server. In Linux, PowerPath cannot be deployed. The high-performance file system and Volume Manager software that was previously purchased for Unix servers cannot be used on Linux. Does this mean that Linux is an inferior platform? Maybe it's just different from what you expect.

The main difference between Linux and Unix is that everything in Linux is open-source, so it can be used for free. By contrast, paying thousands of dollars for the software on the old server is always unpleasant. Taking PowerPath as an example: all Linux hair styles have the native tool-Linux Device Mapper Multipath driver, with the same effect as PowerPath. Even EMC recommends that you use this tool to connect Linux servers and SAN devices.

On a Linux server, you can use volume manager to manage storage, which can save high licensing fees. The Linux built-in logical volume manager can be used to flexibly configure storage. Unix administrators should have little to worry about using these tools, but they still don't believe that free and open-source software will be as reliable as expensive exclusive solutions.

In some cases, specific exclusive software can also be used on the Linux release. They are usually used together with the purchased hardware. If the hardware support list of your Linux release version contains this hardware, you will not encounter any problems. The Linux manufacturer will work with hardware vendors to optimize operation and support. Hardware vendors generally only support enterprise-level Linux distributions, including SUSE, Oracle, Ubuntu, and Red Hat. Free releases may encounter hardware failures.

Unix administrators usually use the ifconfig command to monitor the network usage of the server. This command also exists on Linux. it was discarded after kernel 1996 was released in 2.0. Since then, ip commands are the only way to monitor the IP address in the system. This command has many parameter options to facilitate network management and monitoring.

Even if you are an experienced Unix administrator, you should also consider some technical training so that the technology and experience can fill in these differences between Unix and Linux.
