If older people over the age of 50 eat an apple a day, 8 500 cases of heart attack and stroke deaths can be averted in the UK each year, UK researchers said.
Apple has a drug-like effect on cardiovascular health, such as statins, without any side effects of any of these drugs, the Oxford University researchers said in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). Their hypothesis is based on clinical experimentation rather than direct scientific research.
According to the data survey, adults over two-thirds did not eat five servings of fruits and vegetables per day as recommended.
Dr. Adam Briggs and his colleagues at the British Heart Foundation's Health Promotion group, Oxford University, said that while nine of our 10 people tried to eat at least one piece of fruit a day, we would benefit more if we could consume more.
After their calculations, if adults of all ages can eat more than one extra fruit or vegetable per day, fewer than 11 000 deaths from vascular disease can be avoided each year. They made an analysis of heart and stroke patients with the most common causes of death, known as cardiovascular disease, to Statin or to allow patients over 50 years of age to eat an apple a day and then analyze the effect.
They calculate that, assuming that at least 10 of the seven people follow the advice, Statin can save 9 400 lives and one apple a day keeps 8 500 people alive. Their data is based on drug experiments and observations from hundreds of patients.
