For users who need to watch Netflix programs on Ubuntu Linux, they finally don't need to use tedious solutions. Now, Ubuntu Linux users can directly watch Netflix streaming media programs through Google's Chrome browser. The minimum required software version is Chrome 37 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS or 14.04 LTS.
But why can't Netflix be viewed directly on Ubuntu? The first reason is the Chrome browser's User Agent string-because the software once dressed itself as Microsoft's IE.
Before that, Ubuntu Linux users had to run a Netflix desktop app through WINE (popular Windows software environment simulator on Linux. Although many users can handle the problem, the complicated operations are still quite annoying.
Second, it is about digital rights management (DRM. Netflix does not support all browsers on Linux distributions because it involves the management of digital copyrights.
Chris Hoffman of PC World explained last month that Netflix uses HTML5 to provide streaming media content, but uses the "encrypted media extension" (EME) technology to prevent piracy.
However, the EME extension requires a set of libraries called Network Security Services, otherwise the browser will not be able to access them.
Until recently, Ubuntu does not include NSS support in regular updates. However, after changes to Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04, Netflix can finally access the service without changing the User Agent.
Finally, although Netflix has not made a statement yet, we believe that the support work on other Linux distributions will soon be followed up. Firefox cannot be seen until Mozilla supports encrypted media extensions.
