This section describes how to start and use the WebSphere Application Server Manager (a graphical interface) to customize basic setup parameters for the components of the Servlet activity and WebSphere Application server.
    • 1. To start the WebSphere Application Server Manager
To start the manager of the WebSphere application server, enter url:http://your.server.name:9527/in the Web browser. Where Your.server.name is the fully qualified name of the host. Note: If you start the WebSphere Application Server Manager in a browser on the same machine where the WebSphere application server is installed, use http://localhost:9527/for higher performance.
Manager launches and displays the login page. If you are logged in to the manager for the first time, use admin as the login user identifier and password. Click OK. For security reasons, you should change your login password. To run the manager, you need to support the Java development component (JDK) 1.1.6 appletviewer or browser. See Prepare to install software requirements for WebSphere Application Server and review the options.
    • 2. Using the WebSphere Application server's manager
The browse area on the left side of the manager allows you to customize settings for different WebSphere Application server components, configure Servlets and set aliases and filter, establish and maintain security, collect and monitor WebSphere application servers, connections, and Servlet data.
(1) Customizing basic properties
Before you use WebSphere Application server to manage Servlets, configure the basic setup parameters for the component properties of the servlet activity and WebSphere application servers. In the manager Browse area, click Settings to display a project page that can customize different settings.
Manage pages: Change the user identifier and password to log in to the manager and specify a new port number for the manager.
L Connection Management page: Set up a connection buffer pool to reduce the resources spent maintaining connections to data servers, such as IBM DB2 relational databases.
L Directory Management page: Specify settings for the directory server, allowing security data to be managed from the central location of the WEB server, operating system, WebSphere Application server, and other software products.
Java Engine page: Specify the Java compiler settings and indicate whether the WebSphere application server runs as part of a WEB server for higher performance or as standalone mode for better security.
L Session Tracking page: Specifies settings that maintain status information for user sessions (from the related user request series in the same browser).
User Profile page: Specify settings to maintain permanent information about WEB site visitors.
L Virtual Host page: Specifies an alternate path for the servlet that allows the WEB server to provide different documents based on the different domains specified by the client during the servlet request.
(2) Configuring Servlets, aliases, and filtering
Servlets placed in the <as_root>\servlets directory are automatically loaded and re-loaded when requested (if updated). You can also use WebSphere Application Server Manager to manage servlets more directly by initializing parameters and creating servlet aliases and filtering. To manage a servlet, click Manage Servlet in the Browse area and select the page:
L Configuration page: Defines configuration information and initialization parameters for individual servlets, such as associated class files, whether to start the fashion into servlet, and whether the WEB server loads the servlet from remote.
L Aliases Page: Specifies a path mapping rule that allows the user to enter a shortcut URL to invoke a specific servlet.
L Filter Pages: Contact the servlet and mime-types so that a special servlet is called whenever a specific mime-type response is generated.
(3) Maintenance safety
Establish and maintain security by defining users, groups, resources, and access control tables. By assigning specific access settings to each user, group, and resource, you can precisely control how resources are used for the service and by whom. Click Security in the Manager Browse area to display these pages:
User page: Specifies who is allowed access to WEB pages and other resources, such as Servlets, provided by the WebSphere application server.
L Group page: Associate a user with a named list, allowing access to the entire group at the same time.
L Access Control Table page: Specify access permissions for users and groups.
L Resources page: Specify security parameters for specific directories, files, and Servlets on WebSphere application servers.
(4) Collect and monitor server data
Monitor servlet activity, the status of mounted servlets, and real-time use of resources by viewing log files. Click "Server Execution Analysis" in the monitor browse area to display a list of pages:
JVM Debug Page: Enable JVM Debugging and specify debug settings.
L Event page (under Log file): Monitor the information collected in the event log.
L error page (under Log file): Monitor the information collected in the error log.
L Active Session page (under monitoring): monitors information about the currently active user session on the WEB server, including information about individual sessions and summary information for all active sessions.
Database Buffer Pool Connection page (under monitoring): Monitors connection buffer pool information, including statistics about buffer pools and individual connections.
L Dump Panel page (under monitoring): Specify when and where to create a Servlet dump and an active snapshot.
L Abnormal State (under monitoring): Monitor exception data from Java engine and servlet.
L MOUNTED the servlet page (under monitoring): monitors the status and statistics of individual servlets.
L Log Output page (under monitoring): View the record of the event or error log output.
Resource Usage page (under monitoring): monitor How service resources are used, including memory, request handle object buffer pool, service request, and service response time.
L Tracking Page: monitor tracking data, usually requested by IBM service personnel.
L Logoff: To log off quickly, click "Logout" in the manager's browsing area to return to the manager login screen.
