On June 19, May 16, Canonical announced that Ubuntu 12.10 had ended its lifecycle and officially exited the desktop platform. Today, Ubuntu 13.10, codenamed "playful", also reached the official lifecycle and was officially retired and replaced by Ubuntu 14.04.

In the graphic architecture, Ubuntu 13.10 is equipped with GNOME 3.8 based on Unity 7, and has a built-in Firefox 24 as the default browser. Other applications are also familiar to Ubuntu or Linux desktop users, such as the office suite LibreOffice 4.12, the mail client is Thunderbird 24, the photo is edited with Gimp 2.8.6, and the default music player is Rhythmbox 2.99.1.

The most notable new feature for new users is Smart Scopes (previously called Lens ). When Lens was initially proposed, its function was to integrate the search results of Amazon based on the search results of the local Unity Dash. It was originally used as the default function, but the feature was finally changed to optional.

This time, the retirement of Ubuntu 13.10 also means that Ubuntu 14.04 will become the new main force of the open-source system platform. It is also the third long-term supported version in the Ubuntu milestone and has a longer life cycle, it is more suitable for deployment and use by consumers and enterprise users.
