How Cisco IOS XR increases physical interfaces in VMware environments

In recent years, Cisco high-end routers have basically adopted the iOS XR system, rather than the original iOS system, the original iOS system has a variety of simulators can be simulated, various gameplay, but the iOS XR simulation does not seem to have much choice, The Cisco official website can be downloaded to the iosxrv-k9-demo-5.2.0 file (the version is not necessarily 5.2.0) and can be run using VMware to simulate the iOS XR system.

However, the first time to encounter a problem, is the default iOS XR analog out of the router, only two physical interfaces: mgmteth0/0/cpu0/0, gigabitethernet0/0/0/0, this is obviously not enough to play AH.

So, under VMware, to increase the virtual machine "network adapter", no matter how the increase, to the iOS XR system, the number of physical interfaces is always constant, how can this be good?!

The workaround is this: IOS XR virtual machine in my document, the corresponding folder below, there is a file: xxxxx.vmx,xxxxx corresponds to the name of the virtual machine. Use WordPad to open (note: Do not use Notepad to open and edit, because this will result in the last run of the virtual machine when the error message, "Dictionary error"), the document has the iOS XR physical interface of some information, such as:

Ethernet0.present = "TRUE"

Ethernet0.virtualdev = "e1000"

Ethernet0.connectiontype = "bridged"

ethernet0.startconnected = "TRUE"

Ethernet0.addresstype = "generated"

ethernet0.generatedaddress = "00:0c:29:1c:1d:34"

In this document, the number of Ethernet is consistent with the number of "network adapters" for the virtual machine, which corresponds to each "network adapter" in the virtual machine, depending on the MAC address of each Ethernet in the document. So as long as the "network adapter" of the virtual machine is added, the number of Ethernet in this document is increased and the corresponding configuration is added.

The problem to be solved in this paper is rooted in a command: Ethernet0.virtualdev = "e1000", by default, Ethernet0 and Ethernet1 have the command, other physical interfaces such as Ethernet2, Ethernet3 does not have the command, so the iOS XR virtual router does not have a corresponding physical interface, by adding similar to the following command, you can not increase the physical interface of the router problem:

Ethernet2.virtualdev = "e1000"

Ethernet3.virtualdev = "e1000"

According to the needs of their own experiments, the virtual machine under the additional "network adapter", and in the Vmx file to add the above command, save the document, open again to enter, you can see the iOS XR router physical interface increased, as follows

Rp/0/0/cpu0:xr#sho IP int BRI

Thu Jul 22:45:55.638 UTC

Interface ip-address Status Protocol

mgmteth0/0/cpu0/0 Unassigned Shutdown Down

Gigabitethernet0/0/0/0 Unassigned Up

GIGABITETHERNET0/0/0/1 Unassigned Shutdown Down

GIGABITETHERNET0/0/0/2 Unassigned Shutdown Down

GIGABITETHERNET0/0/0/3 Unassigned Shutdown Down

Note that when you modify the VMX document, you need to close the virtual machine, save the closed document, and then open the virtual machine.

IOS XR virtual machine at the beginning of the time, relatively slow, it takes a long time to load the configuration, and then the previous configuration can not be saved, as long as waiting for a period of time, you can resume normal use.
