How to choose Wiznet's network products

When we choose Wiznet Network products, faced with a lot of devices do not know how to select, here are some methods to help engineers to quickly and accurately select products.

Wiznet's products have a common feature, which is the hardware TCPIP protocol stack. And the difference between them mainly in the interface type, communication performance, the choice is based mainly on the system used by the single-chip microcomputer type and cost of the two factors.

If the system uses 8-bit or 16-bit microcontroller, it also means that the system in data processing and communication rate is not too high requirements, we generally recommend W5100 and W5200, especially recommended W5200.

W5100 generally recommend using a parallel bus. SCM is required to provide 8 data lines (D0~D7), 15 address lines (A0~A14), Chip selection signal (CS), read-write enable signal (RD,WR) and so on. To simplify hardware wiring, you can select an indirect bus, which requires only 2 address lines (A0, A1). Some engineers are concerned with the communication speed difference between the direct bus and the indirect bus, in fact, through our testing, they are almost no difference between.

We generally want to simplify the hardware design, or because the microcontroller can not provide parallel bus interface, then we push the use of W5200. The W5200 provides a high-speed SPI interface that requires only 4 interface lines (Scs,sclk,mosi and miso). In addition, W5200 can provide more socket connections than W5100.

In addition, the W5200 also supports parallel bus interfaces, but unlike W5100, W5200 only has an indirect bus interface. The indirect bus interface is slightly more complicated in software programming than the direct bus interface, but the hardware system is much simpler. So if the customer chooses the parallel bus, we still recommend using the W5200 's indirect bus interface.

If the customer uses the MCS51 series of MCU, in addition to the switching input and output and bus interface, the microcontroller function has no other special requirements (such as ADC, PWM, I²c and so on), you can consider the higher integration of the w7100a. It is the integration of an enhanced W5100 and a high-speed MCS51 microcontroller into a single chip, making the hardware system simpler.

From the cost point of view, unless the customer has a special intention, in 8-bit microcontroller and 16-bit microcontroller system, generally do not choose W5300. In this kind of monolithic microcomputer system, the high-speed performance of W5300 can not be reflected, and the cost of the device is increased.

If customers use high-performance MCU devices such as ARM7, ARM9, DSP, or FPGA, then the product model must be selected based on the customer's requirements for the communication rate.

If the customer is not high in communication rate (less than 3Mbps) and requires a simple hardware interface, the W5200 of the SPI bus can be selected.

In this system, even if you want to use the parallel bus, it is recommended to use the W5200 of the indirect bus interface, it is generally not recommended to choose W5100.

If the customer to the communication rate is more than 3Mbps less than 20Mbps, can choose W5100, only through the parallel bus mode, the hardware design is slightly more complex. Although the SPI clock rate of the W5200 can reach 80MHz, but limited to the MCU's hardware SPI clock limit, the general speed is difficult to raise, but the use of FPGA may be better.

If the customer's communication rate requirement is greater than 20Mbps, then only high-performance device W5300 can be selected. With W5300 and DMA, the communication rate can be up to 60Mbps or higher, but the customer's processor system requirements are high.
