For some users who install Linux and Windows XP, the Windows XP installation CD may fail to be started when Windows XP is reinstalled. The specific manifestation is that the XP installer crashes after "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration..." is displayed. In general, data in the hard disk and the Master Boot Record (MBR) can be erased, or the Linux partition in the system can be deleted to make the XP installation CD work normally. What should I do if I want to reinstall XP without disrupting the original Linux system?
Through a large number of attempts, I found a set of effective methods. The author's system partition is as follows:
1. Fedora 7 and its boot partition (/boot) are installed in/dev/sda1, and the hard disk is set to the first boot option in BIOS.
2. Install Windows XP on/dev/sda1 or another hard disk.
The Operations discussed in this article are carried out in the above context. If the reader's system partition layout is different from the author's (this is indeed the case), the methods discussed in this article may not help you.
Important: The methods discussed below require readers to have certain advanced skills and have a certain understanding of GRUB and NTLoader. Some Operation Details may not be suitable for new users. You need to pay attention to the risks and be careful when performing the operation. I have no commitment or guarantee for this.
Warning some of the tools and commands used in the following discussion may pose potential risks to the system and data. Therefore, unless you do know what you are doing, and can bear the risk of system and data being completely damaged. Otherwise, do not try it easily.
