The Ubuntu Desktop is pre-installed with Apport, which is an error collection system that collects software crashes, unhandled exceptions, and other issues, including program bugs, and generates crash reports for debugging purposes. When an application crashes or a Bug occurs, Apport will warn the user through a pop-up window and ask the user whether to submit the crash report. You may have seen the following message.

  • "Sorry, the application XXXX has closed unexpectedly ."
  • "Sorry, the application XXXX was accidentally closed. "
  • "Sorry, Ubuntu XX. XX has experienced an internal error ."
  • "Sorry, an internal error occurred in Ubuntu XX. XX. "
  • "System program problem detected ."
  • "System Program problems detected. "

It may be because the application has been crashing, and frequent error reports can upset people. Maybe you are worried that Apport will collect and upload sensitive information about your Ubuntu system. For whatever reason, you want to disable the Apport Error Report function.

Temporarily disable Apport Error Report

If you want to temporarily disable Apport, use the following command

  1. $ Sudo service apport stop

Note that restarting the Apport of Ubuntu will continue to be enabled.

Permanently disable Apport error reports

To permanently disable Apport, edit/etc/default/apport and modify the following parameters:

  1. Enabled = 0

Restart your Ubuntu system. Apport will be automatically disabled.

If you no longer use Apport, there is a simple way to completely remove it.

  1. $ Sudo apt-get purge apport
