After upgrading to Ubuntu12.10, if an error occurs on the Unity desktop, you cannot perform $ unity -- reset in the way before 12.04. There are two ways to solve the reset problem: first, add the PPA source and install unity-reset $ sudoadd-apt-repositoryppa: amith/ubuntutools $ sudoapt-getupdate $ sudoapt-get

Second, if you do not want to add a PPA source, you can use dconf-tools Via: How to Reset Unity in Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal
$ Sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
Then execute the command to reset
$ Dconf reset-f/org/compiz/
Finally, restart or run this command to make it take effect.
$ Setsid unity
