Currently, watching HD videos on Windows is a mainstream application. So can HD be viewed on the Linux platform? The answer is yes! Mainstream video card manufacturers are gradually adding or enhancing hardware decoding functions suitable for HD playback in the released Linux platform drivers, which are integrated with powerful media players and decoders on the Linux platform, it is also easier to watch HD movies in Ubuntu.

This article describes how to use GNOME to integrate the Desktop environment based on Ubuntu Desktop 8.10.

1. Install the latest video card driver

HD videos have high requirements on video cards. Currently, new video cards usually support H. 264, VC-1 and Other encoding format hardware decoding, for the old graphics card, you can view the product manual or from its official website to learn about the relevant information. In addition, large-sized displays and sound cards with strong performance are also essential components for HD video appreciation.

To make full use of the hardware functions of the video card, we need to install the latest driver for the video card. This article uses NVIDIA graphics as an example. Find the "hardware driver" under "system> System Management" in The GNOME Desktop menu. Click this item to display the "hardware driver" window. This window lists the current system's video card and whether a third-party driver is installed. You can use this window to install the latest driver provided in the software source on the video card. In addition, we can also download the latest driver from the official website of the video card manufacturer and install it manually. After the driver is installed, restart the system. After the system is restarted, the new graphics card driver is enabled. In the menu "system> System Management", you can see the "nvidia x Server Settings" item. Click this item to open the NVIDIA graphics card Settings window, where you can see the version number of the current graphics card driver.

Ii. Install the playback software and Decoder

To play HD videos, playback software and decoder are essential.

I recommend MPlayer for playing software. MPlayer comes with a graphical front-end program, but many people prefer to use another graphic front-end program SMPlayer on the Internet. You can choose to use it. In addition, on Ubuntu, we can install and use another powerful media player VLC to watch HD videos.

W32codecs is a powerful video decoder on the Linux platform. W32codecs is applicable to the 32-bit Platform Architecture, while W64codecs is applicable to the 64-bit platform architecture.

The above playback software and decoder can be easily installed through the new software package manager. For details about the process, see the article "easily watch online videos in Ubuntu". I will not go into details here.

Now, we can watch HD videos in Ubuntu. I use MPlayer to watch the downloaded P or P HD video. The playback effect is very satisfactory.

Iii. reduce CPU usage

Although the above method can be used to play a 264 p resolution H.264 video file in Ubuntu, it consumes a lot of CPU resources. To reduce the usage of CPU resources, here is a method.

For NVIDIA graphics, the CPU usage of video files such as H.264 can be greatly reduced by using its new VDPAU output interface and MPlayer player software with VDPAU patch. We can refer. In addition, we can download the installation script of mplayer-vdpaufrom the nvidia ftp site ftp://download.nvidia.com/xfree86/vdpau. The latest script file is mplayer-vdpau-0000130.tar.bz2.

During installation, open a GNOME terminal window and enter the following command in the terminal window:

Sudo apt-get build-dep mplayer

This will prepare the corresponding library file for MPlayer source compilation; then enter the command:

Sudo apt-get install subversion

This will install the Version Control Software Subversion. Then decompress the downloaded file mplayer-vdpau-112130.tar.bz2, generate the mplayer-vdpau-3532130 directory under the current directory, enter the directory, enter the command:

Sudo./checkout-patch-build.sh

After the command is executed, the required source code is exported from the MPlayer development source code library to the local hard disk and automatically configured, compiled, and installed. After installation, run the mplayer-vo vdpau-vccodec-name> command to test the video file.

"-Vo" refers to the use of the VDPAU interface to output video images; "-vc" specifies the decoder library used; AU-codec-name> is one of ffmpeg12vdpau, ffh1_vdpau, ffwmv3vdpau, and ffvc1vdpau. It refers to the video file name. For example, to play the video file named test. mov in H.264 format, enter the command:./mplayer-vo vdpau-vc ffh1_vdpau 1_test. mov.
