The GB network adapter is coming, said JesperBrouer of RedHat at the LCA2015 meeting. The full-line speed running of the adapter poses a major challenge to the Linux kernel. Brouer explained that as network adapters get faster and faster, the kernel is getting shorter and shorter to process each packet. Taking a 10 Gb adapter as an example, the interval between two 1538-byte data packets is 1230ns. For a 40 Gb network, the interval is further shortened to 307ns, and for a GB network, the interval is reduced to 120ns again, that is to say, Jesper Brouer of RedHat said at the LCA 2015 meeting, GB network adapter coming soon. For a 40 Gb network, the interval is further shortened to 307ns, and for a GB network, the interval is reduced to 120ns again, that is to say, the kernel needs to process up to 8.15 million packets per second, and it does not have much time to figure out how to process each packet. The minimum capacity Ethernet frame that can be sent is 84 bytes. For a 10 Gb network, the minimum packet interval is 67.2ns. Brouer said that for a 3 GHz CPU, each packet can be processed only for 200 CPU cycles, not many. The kernel is not doing well in dealing with this network-intensive workload.
