In Linux, the disk quota varies according to the restricted items, which can be divided into the space limit (blocks size) and the number of files limit (inodes number ).

Soft limit: The maximum disk space and maximum number of files that a user can have in the file system. This limit can be temporarily exceeded within a certain grace period.

Hard limit: the absolute number of disk space or files that a user can possess cannot exceed this limit.
