System Backup has always been an essential part of network management. There are many system backup solutions, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. This article provides you with a new choice. Use norton ghost 7.5 to back up the system network of various linux servers. From version 7.5, norton ghost supports ext3 file systems, that is, the latest linux 7.2 system backup.

The advantages of using the ghost Network Function for linux system backup are:
1. You do not need to buy a tape drive device. Using a large hard disk, you can back up the entire disk for multiple systems (the current hard disk is cheap ).
2. The network backup function of ghost can be implemented in the existing network environment. A windows Server is used to manage the backup and backup of all linux servers.
3. ghost provides a high-risk backup mode, which can be easily restored even if the system cannot be started and all data is lost.

Disadvantages:
1. Create a boot disk for the ghost client (supporting the network). If the NICS used by linux servers are different, create a boot disk for the server.
2. linux services must be interrupted and the backup takes a long time to back up the linux system through the network.

If the hardware of multiple linux servers is the same, and the network card is of the same model, the advantages of using ghost for system backup are even more prominent.

The software is installed on the backup server. We recommend that you use the win2000 system as the backup server.

Iv. System Environment
One win98 (or Windows XP) system is used as a backup server, and multiple linux systems are used as clients. The twisted pair wires can be directly connected to two machines (one master and one customer) or directly built in an existing network environment.

V. Server Side
The ghostsrv.exe program under the software installation directory is the server end of the ghost. The procedure is described as follows:

Session name: Enter the Task name (the clien end can establish a connection by searching for the task name)
Load clients: If this option is selected, the server already has an image file. Expand the image file to the client, that is, back-to-Backup.
Dump from client: This option is used to create an image file on the client and save it to the server.
Image file: Specifies the location of the image file (read or save)
Disk: entire client hard disk operation
Partition: operate on client partitions

Vi. client
The client is started by a DOS boot disk. You can use the ghost boot wizard program in the software installation directory to create a boot disk with a network driver.
Open the program --> network boot disk --> select the NIC driver --> select the DOS version --> set the IP address --> Format the floppy disk to start making the disk.
Two Nic drivers are available: packet and NDIS. There are some driver options in the list. If not, you can download them from major websites or manufacturers' websites.
Generally, the packet package is in the Rtspkt folder of the NIC driver. The file name is *. com or *. exe.
(I used the Real Tek 8139 Nic and the packet package is Rtspkt.com .)
View the help information of the NIC Driver. Some NICs need to load parameters.
The general parameter format is 0x *** 0x ***. The first two "**" are soft interruptions, and the third "*" is hard interruptions, the last "*" is the I/O address.

Now it is difficult to find norton ghost 2002 Enterprise Edition download on the Internet. Even if there is a so-called cracked version and a registered version, after the unlock, ghost boot wizard will not work properly.

There are two solutions:

1. Find the previous version of norton ghost 6.0 ,:

After this version is installed, norton boot wizard can be used. After the boot disk is started, change the client of ghost 6.0 to the client of ghost 7.5, and change the content of autoexec.exe.

2. Create an installation disk according to the content of the above boot disk.

7. Specific operations
1. Start ghostsrv.exe on the serverend and follow the prompts in step 5 to back up the client or overwrite the image to the client. Click the Accept client button to start.
2. Start the client with the boot disk, and choose ghostcast --> unicast --> task name --> specify the server IP address. If the network connection is normal, ghost displays the hard disk information.

8. Use of ghostexp
The ghostexp program in the installation directory can manage all the image files, view the content in the image files, copy, delete, and cut operations.
Therefore, if a file in linux is damaged and the system can be started properly, you can read the file from the image file through the ghostexp program and copy it back to the linux system using a floppy disk or FTP.

9. Test Results
One pentium 133, 64 MB memory, and a win98 System for backup server,
One pentium III, 7.2 m memory, 40 Gb hard disk, linux, as the ghost client,
Hard Disk file size: 1860 MB; cloned image file size: 942 MB
Compression mode: high; Network Mode: unicast
Backup time: about 40 minutes; backup time: about 30 minutes
The linux system cannot be started automatically after the backup.
Start with the boot disk and run the grub-install/dev/hda command. Everything works !!!

Tip: After multicast is selected, the ghost client reads wattcp. cfg file content to set the nic ip address. If the NIC is correctly set and the network connection is normal, the server can PING the client IP address.

IX. Additional instructions
1. Make sure that the boot disk of the linux system is ready. If the hard disk MBR area is lost or you have formatted the hard disk, the linux system cannot be started after the system is restored. If the original system uses GRUB boot, use the grub-install command to write back to the MBR zone. If the original system uses lilo boot, use the lilo command to restore the MBR zone.
2. Before overwriting the image to the client, delete the system's temporary files, log files, and cache to reduce the image file size.
3. if conditions permit, you can make a CD-ROM boot disk, the client image file and NIC Driver Installed on the disc. When a problem occurs with the client, you can start it with a CD instead of using the network to reduce the backup time.
