LinuxMint15: a smooth Ubuntu alternative

LinuxMint provides three versions and includes rolling update options for developers. Friends who are interested in LinuxMint are currently in an awkward situation. Both of them have a deep impact on LinuxMint, but LinuxMint15 has been simplified successfully while retaining all the steps being executed (the KDE version was cleaned up this time ). We found that

Friends who are interested in Linux Mint are currently in an awkward situation. Mint is based on Ubuntu, Ubuntu is based on Debian, and Debian uses the removable Linux kernel as its pillar. All of the three have a deep impact on Linux Mint, but Linux Mint 15 has been simplified successfully while all the steps are retained (the KDE version is cleaned up this time ).

We found that Linux Mint 15 is indeed smoother, more powerful, and more powerful than the previous version. We are curious about the rolling version of Debian. In addition, although it is named Linux Mint 15, it is actually more like Linux Mint Forever. For a series of reasons, we do not recommend that common users use this operating system. There is also a simplified version named Linux Mint Xfce.

Some clumsy applications are removed from the main version, and support for outdated hardware continues to weaken-though few users may disagree. We still need to download and replace the application, because many of the original programs will produce strange errors in the new environment.

The most obvious example is the media application Brasero. On our testing devices (Lenovo T520 and T530), it cannot record ISO images in the standard CD, sometimes, even the first burning cannot be completed successfully. To solve this problem, we use K3B as an alternative and, based on our experience, its performance is generally more stable than Brasero. But now we can smoothly install the USB flash drive or use the USB "portable disk" as the initial boot mechanism.

After the new version is installed, the absolute number of necessary updates is greatly reduced, which makes us very pleased. This shows that the system can always use data from the correct resource library, and the entire update mechanism has been well transformed.

You can download the Linux Mint 15 ISO image file, which is more complete than the previous version and reduces the consumption during the upgrade.

Linux Mint 15 (Olivia)

Linux Mint 15 is divided into three basic versions: The main download version, Xfce, and LMDE.

By default, the files downloaded from the main version include Cinnamon 1.8 and Mate 1.6. Currently, we recommend that you select the primary version instead of the LMDE version.

Linux Mint 15 LMDE is based on relatively pure Deiban source code and more traditional Cinnamon and Mate versions, and belongs to a set of Debian Forever versions (that is, rolling update versions ). You can also choose the KDE version, which is based on Linux Mint 14 (from the release level) rather than Olivia. Currently, we have not found a port for ARM on Linux Mint 15 server, smartphone, or tablet devices. In contrast, Ubuntu and Debian do better in this regard.

Xfce only requires less than MB of memory and less than 5 GB of storage space. This is a standard simplified version. It is already the most pocket system version we can get, but it must be emphasized that it is essentially a virtual machine.

The basic download and installation processes of Linux Mint 15 can be perfectly performed on our limited laptop testing platform. In addition, virtual machine environments such as Oracle VirtualBox, VMware ESXi, and Citrix XenServer are enough to make it a fit.

It supports EFI boot, so it can be easily used as an alternative to Windows 8 systems or a parallel dual-boot solution. It can also reduce the size of Windows 7 or Windows 8 and make it use its own independent partition, that is, using the famous Grub2 boot program for Dual Boot.

Five partitions are created in this way. The Linux Mint 15 and Windows are located in the primary boot area, and the recovery partition is responsible for data backup of the two systems respectively, next, Lenovo provides factory settings to restore partitions, and finally two memory detection partitions at startup. By default, the device will start the first operating system after it is started-in our instance, that is, Linux Mint.

We need to remind you that our Lenovo laptop uses BIOS instead of UEFI when processing all the partitions and installation work. Of course, this is related to the settings of Lenovo devices. If Windows 7 or Windows 8 systems are provided by UEFI settings, currently we can only disable related options in BIOS. The Windows UEFI boot mechanism on some devices can implement backup system boot through modifications, but this depends on the specific device and BIOS type.

Although we appreciate UEFI's Master Boot Record/MBR isolation mechanism, we still need to regret its poor non-Windows system support capabilities.

Linux Mint still follows the Ubuntu Foundation, that is, the user is assigned to a non-root session, and the initial user password is set to the root password. We believe that the intrusion solution for this security vulnerability will appear in the early evening. After all, the root user and the user should never share the same password.
