Not only does Microsoft open-source Office suite compete

Article Title: not only Microsoft open-source Office suite competition. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.

Microsoft's monopoly in the field of office productivity applications is declining. One of the most important reasons for this situation is the increasingly active open source productivity suite. The most obvious example is OpenOffice.org, which has now released the third version-a milestone in the development history of this product. However, only OpenOffice.org is eye-catching.

This article will review OpenOffice.org's latest version OpenOffice.org 3.0, Sun's commercial support version StarOffice, IBM Lotus Symphony, Linux Office software KOffice, and a very small but very practical AbiWord. It is misleading to talk about how these products completely replace Microsoft Office, so we will try our best to show everyone what exists in each product.

  OpenOffice.org 3

OpenOffice.org is a product that is gradually evolved, not revolutionary. It is the product of OpenOffice.org 2 upgrade. Compared with earlier versions, OpenOffice.org 3 has not undergone a thorough "overhaul"-this is different from Microsoft's Office 2007.

The biggest change in OpenOffice.org 3 is actually a collection of many small changes. For example, Mac users are happy to know that OpenOffice.org 3 is now a local application. All applications in the suite can be started through a simple uniform interface or System Tray starter, which can also be used as the accelerator for the suite. The overall performance of OpenOffice.org 3 is significantly better than that of its previous generation, even if you do not use an application to start the accelerator.

Other features added in OpenOffice.org include the Equation Solver and calculator workbook sharing function; Impress supports multiple monitors; supports VBA Macros.

You can use OpenOffice.org 3 to directly open the OOXML format file of Office 2007, but you cannot save the file as OOXML, because some of the existing OOXML files cannot be converted correctly. For example, if a file contains multiple verbal characters (such as English and Japanese) in the same line, the line spacing will be damaged during import. However, if you save the file as a Word 2003 file and import it, there will be no problem.

One of my favorite features of OpenOffice is the ability to directly input PDF without a plug-in or virtual printer driver, as well as encryption and table functions. In OpenOffice.org 3, the selection range of the PDF input is slightly expanded. The biggest upgrade is support for PDF/.

However, some minor problems in OpenOffice.org are still worrying me. For example, the tools at the bottom of the file window are not so easy to understand-you may never know the small square marked with "STD" or what is the use of the small square marked with an asterisk next to it, unless you refer to the user manual. This is actually very inconvenient. When you develop a software for common users, ease of use is very important, and the user manual is the last method to be used.

Remember, OpenOffice.org is not the only one. GoOO is the same as the source code library used by OpenOffice.org, but it has been optimized in terms of speed. In my daily work, I usually use GoOO and OpenOffice.org in turn, because the file formats of the two are completely compatible, and the speed and stability of the former are slightly faster. OpenOffice.org of PortableApps can run on a removable drive, so it can be used as a trial of the software, saving some problems caused by formal installation.
