Therefore, the number of information points discussed in cabling planning mainly comes from server cabinets.

In the data center design, the actual calculation should be based on the technical parameters of the selected server or the server with purchasing preference.

In server cabinets, there are three types of servers:

Place the standard server in the Cabinet;

Use a combination of blade servers above 3U and install them in the Cabinet;

For these three server structures, you can calculate the number of information points for each cabinet:

Rack for installing standard servers

The simplest server Cabinet is to place a desktop computer on the pallet in the cabinet. To improve the Cabinet utilization, you can use the simple host sharing tool KVM to reduce the display, keyboard, and mouse of each computer to one set, you can also use a high-end host shared device to move the display, keyboard, and mouse to the control room and operation room outside the master room.

Rack for 1U rack Server Installation

The guiding ideology of rack-mounted servers is space saving and unified design. Since multiple servers can be mounted to one cabinet, it not only takes up less space, but also facilitates unified management.

In a data center, the Cabinet height is generally about 42U2 meters), while a cabinet can usually accommodate 17 rack-mounted servers with a 1U height, each server is equipped with one pallet or one horizontal jumper manager ). 1. Rack for installing blade servers

The blade server is similar to a slot-type network device or a card-type phone switch device. It uses dedicated blade server chassis, inserts blade plug-ins according to the functional requirements of the server, and forms a high-performance server with different functions using a combination. Therefore, we can say that blade servers are DIY assembled servers. Server blades are divided into server blades, network blades, storage blades, management blades, fiber-channel SAN blades, and extended I/O Blades Based on the server functions required, various "blades" provide different functions on the server.

It can be said that the development trend of blade servers is inevitably from pure "server integration" to core components that can integrate enterprises' storage, network, and exchange devices. At the same time, the management of multiple scattered servers will be centralized to the management of one server, which will greatly reduce the IT management personnel cost, simplify IT infrastructure, and improve management efficiency.

For cabling designers, the biggest advantage of blade servers is that each server chassis is 3U ~ In 7U), only one set of network interfaces is available. Of course, one set of network interfaces in Hot Backup status may also be available.

2. Demand for information points in each cabinet

Based on the above calculation, we can roughly determine the demand for information points in each cabinet:

Standard Server Cabinet

Rack-mounted server Cabinet

3. Redundancy and backup considerations

Data center redundancy and backup are common issues to consider. During server configuration, network redundancy and backup are usually performed in two ways:

Add the same number of NICs/network blades.

Install NICs/network blades of different media. For example: Electrical port/multimode optical port, multimode optical port/single-mode optical port, single-mode optical port/electrical port, etc.

When network redundancy is designed, the number of information points of the server cabinet increases accordingly.

4. Role of the horizontal jumper Manager

For rack-mounted servers or blade servers, each server generally has no more than 2 electrical ports, 1 optical port, and 1 KVM port, that is, only four jumpers may exist. However, for a server cabinet with more than a dozen rack servers or blade servers, the situation is completely different: it may be used for nearly a hundred jumpers!

If the patch cords are scattered around the server or pulled directly to the vertical slots on both sides, you can imagine what the server jumper will look like? A large number of jumpers cover the server. It's hard to change a patch cord, and to tie the cables neatly to the desired level of appreciation.

If a horizontal jumper manager is installed under the server and distribution frame instead of pulling the jumper to both sides, the Jumper will only expose 20 ~ 30mm of the socket head, and the cable part in the Jumper is almost all hidden inside the manager, neither visible nor touching, both seeing the indicator and ensuring the beautiful shape in the server cabinet, the Jumper can be easily replaced and the Jumper itself is protected. Why not do such a good thing?

There are roughly two reasons why the Jumper manager is unwilling to be used:

Occupied part of the cabinet space

High density view: Each jumper manager occupies a 1U height. For a rack-mounted server, this is equivalent to the height of a 1U rack-mounted server, that is, it can be considered that half of the cabinet space is "wasted", even if it is a blade server cabinet, 1/4 of the space is occupied by the following manager. If all these spaces can be used, the Cabinet utilization will be greatly increased, and more value can be created and more profits can be obtained.

Reasonable layout: the horizontal jumper manager occupies part of the space, but it is worth consuming. In the office layout, more and more designers prefer 10 m²/person office space. If any office uses a 4 m²/person office space, they will be asked: why is the desk size so small? Where are file cabinets placed? How can I get to my desk? In fact, smart buildings are pursuing psychological comfort and physical comfort. The room is becoming more and more spacious, the height of the room is getting higher and higher, and the lighting is getting brighter and brighter ....... So why cannot we provide a loose and beautiful environment for server cabinets?

I agree with the latter viewpoint. Cabinets are like desks. Some people like to tidy up and some like to put things in disorder. In today's society, appearance is a form of representation of the management level. For a business-type data center, if the cabinet is messy, it will scare away a group of potential customers; for a self-use data center, if the cabinet is messy, the door of the master data center can only be closed to the top management personnel forever, so that they do not require time-and labor-consuming data center arrangement.
