Article title: Sun is about to release the "bear" Linux server. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.
According to sources familiar with Sun's program, Sun will release a controversial Linux server named "Big Bear" at the LinuxWorld exhibition held on August this year, displays an Intel-based dual-processor system.
The server named Cobalt LX50 is Sun's first general-purpose server running Sun Linux, it may attract customers of server systems that need to process emails, files, and media tasks. The new server has two Intel 1.4 GHz Pentium III processors and two GB hard drives. several software packages may be bundled in future versions, including Sun's Grid Engine software and Sun ONE Internet software.
LX50 will be issued by Scott McNealy, Chairman and CEO of Sun's board of directors, in a keynote speech at the LinuxWorld conference. At the beginning of this year Sun announced a plan to launch a Linux server, but did not provide details about the system.
The release of a Linux server marks that Sun no longer focuses on its own Solaris operating system and UltraSPARC processor. Sun once claimed that the combination of UltraSPARC and Solaris could outperform any competitor in terms of performance, but Sun later changed his position, it indicates that Linux running on Intel chip is especially suitable for edge computing tasks such as streaming media or email. Sun has used the Red Hat Linux modified version on some server appliances. now Sun is ready to use its own Sun Linux on the new server.
