Linus Torvalds talked in an interview about the ubiquitous Linux, patent system, open-source, Linux-running home computer devices, and increasingly complex Linux kernel development and programming.

Linus believes that the term "intellectual property" should be avoided, not because it is a bad term, but because it is mixed into too many things that should not be mixed in. There are different forms of "intellectual property rights", and there is almost no intersection between them. He believes that the patent system in the United States is fragmented, and many patents are meaningless, but u. S. Patent and Trademark Office officials are reluctant to say no to them, the reason is that the company applying for a patent upon rejection will submit an application again after slight modification, bringing them more work burden. Enterprises like to apply for vague and broad-range patents, because they can apply them to situations that are not originally appropriate-that is, litigation.

Linus said that patent licensing or cross-patent licensing costs are irrelevant to the value of the patent itself, but are related to litigation costs. He pointed out that the patent war has been systematic and patent prisoners are running this crazy system.

Linus said that he does not have a Microsoft or Apple system in his home. Some of his computers were originally pre-installed with Windows or OS X, but finally all were installed with Linux. He used to use 11 inch Macbook Air, but because the screen of the Macbook Air is too bad, he now switched to 11 inch Sony Vaio Pro, the weight is less than one kg. There are some Android phones and tablets and two Chromebook laptops in his home.

Linus does not think that everyone should learn programming. It is said that programming is quite professional, different from basic skills such as reading and writing arithmetic.
