Last weekend, I tried to enable Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 8.1 on a dual-boot basis. The following describes how to implement dual boot. Some readers may not be able to skip the steps to introduce how to back up Windows files, but I still hope you will remember the importance of backup.

I. back up Windows

There are two steps to back up Windows:

  • Create a recovery drive to back up Windows 8.1
  • File creation history, used to back up personal files

To recover a drive, you need a USB flash drive with at least 16 GB of idle storage space. Insert the USB drive to your computer. You should ensure that no data needs to be retained on the drive because it will be erased clean during this process. If you do not have a USB drive, you can create a restored DVD.

For historical file backup, we recommend that you use an external hard drive, but this depends on how much data you have. If you don't have much data, you can use a USB drive. If you have no other storage media on hand, you can back up it to a DVD.

This guide assumes that you are using Windows 8.1, but most of the steps here are similar to Windows 8.

In the first guide, I introduced how to use the Windows 7 recovery tool to create a recovery disk and a system image file. In this guide, I used a simple Windows 8 recovery drive tool. To create a recovery drive, just press the super key on the keyboard (Windows key) and click the magnifier in the upper right corner.

Enter "Recovery ".

The "Create a recovery drive" option appears ). Click this option. The system will ask you if you are willing to grant permissions for the application to run. The answer is: you are willing to grant permissions.

Restoring the drive allows you to return Windows 8.1 to the working state. After the "Create a recovery drive" window appears, click "Next" to continue.

Click the available USB drive to be used and click "Next" (Next ).

A message is displayed, confirming that you want to create a drive, and issuing a warning that all data on the target drive will be deleted.

If you are sure you do not need to recover any data on the drive, click "Create ).

It takes several minutes to create the drive, but a screen appears, indicating that the drive is ready. Safely remove the drive and place it in a small plastic bag (such as a sandwich bag) or envelope. Place a label on a bag or envelope and store it in a safe place. If something goes wrong during or after Ubuntu is installed, you will be glad to have taken the above steps.

Now, insert the drive you want to use to store all your personal data. Frankly speaking, whether you want to continue to install Ubuntu or not, you should do this step well. Press the "super" key (Windows key) on the keyboard, and then press the search icon in the upper right corner.

Enter the word "File History" (File History ). Click the "Save backup copies of your files with File History" option. A screen similar to the above screen should appear. Click "Off" to switch the file history to "On ).

Click the link shown as "Select a different drive" (Select different drives. Find the drive you want to Back up and click Back up now ).

After a while, all your files will be backed up to the new drive.

Note: This application assumes that all files are stored in folders such as Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop. If this is not the case, we recommend that you use Windows Resource Manager to manually copy any files that are not stored in these folders.

II. create an Ubuntu USB drive

If you want to skip this step, or if your internet connection is poor, click here to buy Ubuntu 14.04 on a USB drive. Of course, if you do this, you need to add the page to favorites and wait until the USB drive appears in its location.

If you decide to create a USB drive that can be started, you need another blank USB drive to continue.

Insert the USB drive to your computer. Visit http://www.ubuntu.com/download/shorttopic. Make sure that you select the 64-bit version. Click "Download" to Download the file.

To create a USB drive that can be started, we recommend that you use the Universal USB Installer (Universal USB Installer) from www.pendrivelinux.com ).

Click the pendrive Linux link above and scroll down to half of the page until you see the "Download UUI" link. Click the download link to download the program.

After the download is complete, double-click the executable file.

After the license agreement screen appears, read the agreement carefully. if you accept the license, click "I Agree" (I Agree ).

Creating a drive is straightforward. The first thing to do is select the selected release from the drop-down list, which is Ubuntu.

Click "Browse. Find the downloaded Ubuntu ISO image file.

Select the USB drive letter you selected and make sure that the "We will format" option is selected.

At this time, you can create a USB drive so that it can save data. In this way, you can install the software when using the Live Ubuntu version. the software is still available the next time you start from the USB drive.

Click "Create" to continue.

A summary screen will tell you what is going to happen. Your USB drive will basically be completely erased, and Ubuntu will be installed as a Live image file. If you want to continue, click "Yes" (OK ).

Now you will see a progress bar showing how many installation processes are completed and how long it is expected to last.

At this time, you can take a break and have a drink or some snacks.

III. shrink Windows partition

Windows occupies the entire drive after the first installation. To install Ubuntu, you need to make room for it. Press the "super Key" (Windows key) on the keyboard and click the magnifier in the upper right corner. Enter "Partitions" in the search box ".

Click "Create and format partitions" (Create and format partition. This will bring up the "Disk Management" screen.

To zoom out the drive, right-click the OS (C :) volume and select "Shrink volume ).

A screen will show you how much you want to shrink the drive. Of course, you can choose to shrink the drive less than the provided value, but do not exceed the provided value, because if you do so, it will cause the Windows 8.1 operating system to run normally.

Click "Shrink" to continue.

After you finish, you will see a large unpartitioned space. Ubuntu will be installed in this part of space.

4. disable quick start

To start your Ubuntu USB drive, you need to disable the quick start option.

Press "super Key" (Windows key), and then click the magnifier in the upper right corner. Enter "Control Panel ". Click "Control Panel.

After "Control Panel" appears, click the title of "System and Security.

Click "Power Options ). On the screen that appears later, click "Choose what the power button does" (select the power button function ).

A screen is displayed titled "Define power buttons and turn on password protection" (Define the power button and enable password protection ). Scroll down until you see "Shutdown Settings ). There should be an option named "Turn on fast startup" (recommended), that is, "enable quick start" (recommended ). Do not select this option. Click Save Changes ).

5. disable Secure Startup

Theoretically, you do not need to perform this step. But in fact, you need to disable secure startup, which is almost certain. Disabling secure boot depends on the brand and model of your computer, because each computer has a slightly different method of disabling secure boot. However, in general, click "super Key" (Windows key), and then click the power icon next to your user name.

Press and hold the shift key on the keyboard to restart the computer. Hold down shift until the computer restarts. Now you have an option to go to UEFI startup settings. In the UEFI settings, find the option to disable secure startup. You do not need to switch to the traditional mode or switch to the traditional mode, because it does not help you. Save and exit UEFI settings.

6. install Ubuntu

After you disable secure startup, save and restart. You may eventually go back to Windows. At this time, in order to start Ubuntu on the USB drive, I had to re-press the shift key while restarting the computer.

One of the options that appears allows me to start from a USB drive to Ubuntu 14.04 Live. you should have a similar option available.

After you start Ubuntu in the Live version for the first time, you will see a screen similar to the above screen. The only difference is that I closed the window that shows all keyboard shortcuts to make it easier to highlight the "Install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS" icon.

To start installation, double-click the "Install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS" icon.

The first thing you need to do is determine the language you want to use. Unless you think it is not difficult enough, I will choose the language you normally use. Click "Next" to continue.

The next screen allows you to select which internet connection is used during Ubuntu installation. I always choose not to connect, which is a good reason. Because I am in the country, the internet connection is not powerful. I don't want to install the installation program because the network connection is interrupted during the installation process.

I like to install the operating system and run the new version later. If your broadband connection is awesome and you want to connect to it now, you can download the new version during the installation process. This slows down the initial installation process, but saves time in the future because you do not need to install many new versions.

After you click "Next" (Next step), you will see a check list that shows how you prepare for installing Ubuntu.

As you can see, I have two checked items, because I have enough disk space and I have inserted a power supply. At this stage, I decided not to connect to the network (so I had the cross fork ). Click "Continue ).

In the past, there was an option on the "Installation Type" screen to be installed with Windows.

If you are installed with Windows 7 on a system that is not based on EFI, this option is still available. Click "Something Else" and click "Next ).

The next screen may seem quite complex, but it actually shows the current disk layout.

The following steps should be taken with caution. If you have not performed a Windows backup, exit the installation, restart the system, and follow step 1 in this tutorial again. Take a look. You will see a large amount of idle space (710155 MB ). I installed Ubuntu here.

Idle space is divided into three partitions:

The first partition is used for Ubuntu and the size is 50 GB.

The second partition is used for the primary partition to store configuration files and your personal files (such as music and photos ).

The third partition is used for swap space, which is used for intensive operations and computer suspension.

Click the partition with idle space and click the plus sign (+) under the disk layout ).

In the size box, enter 50000, select logical partition as the partition type, select Beginning of this space (the starting part of the space), and select EXT4 as the file system. As for the mount point, select/(which means root ). Click "OK" (OK ).

The disk layout screen should now display new partitions.

Find a large portion of the idle space again, click it, and then press the plus sign (+) again ). This time, you should set the size to the remaining part of the idle disk space minus twice the computer memory capacity. If you have 8 GB of memory, then 16 GB is subtracted.

Select "Logical" as the partition type, place the start part of the partition space, and select EXT4 as the file system. For the mount point, select/home.

The question of how much swap space to use is often controversial. Some people say that you don't need swap space at all; some choose 1.5 times of memory capacity, and some say it should be twice of memory capacity. Unless the disk space is precious, I will select twice as much as that.

Theoretically, if you run many intensive processes (such as video editing), the swap space is used to store the memory data that is not currently used (exchanged) to the disk. This is a disk-intensive operation that slows down your computer, but it helps prevent system crashes. The swap space is also used to suspend a computer.

Find the idle disk space again, click it, and press the plus sign (+ ).

Let this size be used as the rest of the idle disk space, select the logical file system, and select the starting part of the space as the location. Select "swap area" as the Mount point. The last thing to note when partitioning is where to install the boot loader.

By default, it is set to/dev/SDA on the "Installation Type" screen. This location can be changed, but do not change it unless you are using multiple disks.

Press "Install Now" (Install Now) to continue.

Installation is now started, but the system will ask you a few questions about the configuration type during installation. First, click the map and select your location.

Press "Continue" (Continue ).

The next screen requires you to select the keyboard layout. Just select the layout you are using and press "Continue ).

You are required to create a default user. Enter the name, computer identification name, user name, and password. You can also choose whether to log on automatically or enter a password for each logon.

The progress bar shows how much has been completed during your installation. You can also view a series of information about Ubuntu. At this time, you can relax again. The length of time depends on the speed of your computer. After that, the system will ask you if you want to restart, start using Ubuntu, or continue using the Live version of Ubuntu.

After I restarted, it went straight back to Windows, so I had to restart and go back to the Live session. Therefore, you can trust me in this case, continue to stay in the Live session, or restart to see if the installation is successful without any additional steps.

7. start repair

I want to assume that you decided to immediately restart your computer and go straight to Windows after it was started, without providing the Ubuntu option. Log on to Windows and click the power icon next to the user name in the upper-right corner.

Press the shift key and choose to restart the computer. Hold down shift until the computer restarts. When UEFI settings appear, select start from USB again. Now, you will enter the Live session of Ubuntu after starting.

Click the network icon in the upper-right corner and select your network connection. You may need to enter a security key. (Otherwise, you should check the router settings after completing this process, because your internet connection is completely open ). Press "super Key" (Windows key) and type "term" to open the terminal. In the terminal window, enter the following commands in sequence:

  1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair 
  2. sudo sh -c "sed -i 's/trusty/saucy/g' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/yannubuntu-boot-repair-trusty.list" 
  3. sudo apt-get update 
  4. sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && boot-repair 

The boot and repair screen appears.

Click "Recommended repair" (Recommended ).

After doing this, I received a message indicating that "EFI has detected ". As far as I know, this is only an information message, because Ubuntu can be installed when EFI is enabled. After you click "OK" (OK) for the message detected by EFI, the utility executes several tasks and asks me to select some text and run it in the terminal window.

If the system requires you to do this, open a new terminal window (press "super", enter "term" in Dash, and click the icon that appears .) Copy text from the start repair window, so you only need to select text with the mouse. Press CTRL and C, right-click the terminal window, and select paste.

Make sure that all commands are correctly run. You may need to press the Enter key to run the previous command. Now, click the "Forward" button in the start and fix application. You may be required to copy and paste more text.

Repeat the process of selecting all files, press CTRL and C, right-click the terminal window, and select paste. Make sure these commands run properly. Continue the process until the restoration is started.

If you are the same as me, you will see a message after the repair process ends, indicating that an error is detected after the repair is started (not a good thing ). At this time, it is necessary to copy the link and send it to the pastebin website, but I think you can continue to the next step.

8. fixed the boot loader.

It is almost time to complete. Restart your computer. Unless you are lucky, the system will still start directly into Windows. In fact, this is all right, because we will use Windows to fix the boot loader. Log on to Windows and make sure that you see a desktop, not a tiled pane screen. Hover the mouse over the lower left corner and right-click the mouse. You will see the options for the administrator command prompt. Click this option.

In the administrator command prompt, type the following command:

  1. bcdedit /set "{bootmgr}" path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi 

Exit the command prompt.

9. restart to enter Ubuntu

Restart your computer.

This time when the computer is started, you will see four options.

  1. Ubuntu
  2. Ubuntu (advanced)
  3. Windows (content similar to Windows startup options may be displayed)
  4. Setup

Select the 1st option. Ubuntu 14.04 should appear now. It is worth celebrating.

10. restart Windows

Restart the computer (click the symbol in the upper-right corner, click shutdown, and restart ). After the menu appears this time, click the Windows option. Your computer should start back to Windows 8.


The steps I 've described in this article are to enable dual-boot for Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 8.1 on my Dell Elastic Compute Service. I hope this process applies to other computers.
