Use a trendy phrase to describe Ubuntu: "Don't be infatuated with Brother, brother is just a legend ". Why? (The Voice of Shenyang echoed in our ears ...) The operating system I have been using is Debian, from sarge to etch to lenny, and then to the current testing version: squeeze. Ubuntu is only deployed on the Compilation server. Use a trendy phrase to describe Ubuntu: "Don't be infatuated with Brother, brother is just a legend ". Why? (The Voice of Shenyang echoed in our ears ...)
The operating system I have been using is Debian, from sarge to etch to lenny, and then to the current testing version: squeeze. Ubuntu is only deployed on the Compilation server.
The company encouraged different open-source operating systems, but I found that most people still use Debian, and even some people walk on the blade and use the SID (unstable version of Debian ).
IDC layout: do not be infatuated with Ubuntu, Ubuntu is just a legend
In the past few days, the company has prepared to build a KVM Virtual Machine and finally decided to use the Unbutu platform. Because the legendary Ubuntu documentation on Virtualization is comprehensive, although we know that RedHat is also developing a competitive virtual machine solution based on KVM, it really does not like the Redhat Package Manager.
During the setup process, several problems of Ubuntu were found one after another. It seems that Ubuntu is just a legend.
The current Lucid network installation version cannot be installed
Now it is July 22, April 15, and Ubuntu 10.4 (lucid) will be released in another half month. How can we directly install Lucid?
So I downloaded the netboot of Lucid and put it on the company's tftp server. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 lucid through the network.
But encountered a major problem during installation: When the installation is in the disk partition, the system prompts that the hard disk cannot be found!
The reason is obvious: some necessary drivers are not placed in netboot's initrd, while karmic's network installation is good, indicating that Lucid has degraded its functionality.
The same bug report has been found on the Ubuntu website. This bug has been listed as an important issue that must be resolved before release.
Most PATA/SATA modules missing in Lucid netboot
There are still less than 15 days of release. I recall that when I was a project manager, I had to rush to release products without in-depth testing. The consequences were really serious...
Gnome Desktop installation cannot be minimized
Karmic (Ubuntu 9.10) is installed on the server, and the installation process is smooth. After the restart, a friendly command prompt is displayed.
"Does this server need a desktop ?" -- Someone proposed.
"Okay, just install Gnome. KDE is too heavy ." -- The Administrator responded.
Execute the following command:
$ Sudo aptitude install gnome
An error is reported here...
Or error...
A lot of errors... What's weird? Run the following command:
$ Sudo aptitude install gnome-desktop-environment
...
The following software packages have dependency that is not met:
Gamin: Conflict: fam, but 2.7.0-16ubuntu1 will be installed.
Gnome-desktop-environment: Dependency: fast-user-switch-applet (> = 2.22.0) This is a virtual software package.
Brasero: Conflict: nautilus-cd-burner but 2.25.3-0ubuntu3 will be installed.
...
The cause of the pain was originally a problem with Ubuntu itself:
Fast-user-switch-applet packages are dependent on the gnome-desktop-environment package, while the gnome package depends on the gnome-desktop-environment package $ aptitude show gnome-desktop-environment
Software Package: gnome-desktop-environment
Status: Not Installed
Version:. 22.2 ~ 4tutu8
...
Dependent on:..., fast-user-switch-applet (> = 2.22.0),... fast-user-switch-applet package does not exist in the karmic source!
On the ubuntu.com website, you can find that this package exists in all previous versions, and also in the version 10.4 to be released, but not in the karmic version.
As an important component of gnome, gmtis identified as conflicting with fast-user-switch-applet! $ Aptitude why-not fast-user-switch-applet
I running a fast-user-switch-applet conflict. Ubuntu seems to be a tangle of fast-user-switch-applet packages.
It may be discovered that the fast-user-switch-applet package has a problem in Gnome. It is identified as a conflict in the related package directly, and the package is revoked from the source. However, it was not expected that there were still important packages dependent on it.
Isn't Gnome Desktop installed?
Search by Google and find the Ubuntu official website report on this issue:
Gnome-desktop-environment has Broken packages in Karmic
Someone suggested that Gnome can be installed through the ubuntu-desktop package.
Ubuntu-desktop?
If ubuntu-desktop is installed, you need to install many unnecessary packages on the server, such as OpenOffice.org! A waste of several hundred megabytes of space!
To avoid installation of unnecessary packages, you may need to install other desktops: xfce? Kde?
