For example, the window manager of the standard GNOME Desktop System is Metacity. The Windows Manager used by the Ubuntu Unity desktop system is Compiz. We can download and install the Metacity window manager on the premise of using the Ubuntu Unity desktop system.

Common Desktop systems include:

1) KED and Kubuntu

Kunbuntu = Ubuntu-GNOME + KDE

You can download the kubuntu-desktop package from the Ubuntu Software Center to install Kubuntu in standard Ubuntu. Kunbuntu is based on the KED desktop system.

2) Xfce and Xubuntu

Xubuntu uses less memory and CPU than standard Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Install Xubuntu with Xfce desktop system. You can download the xubuntu-desktop package from the Ubuntu Software Center.

3) LXDE and Lubuntu

Lunbuntu is based on LXDE desktop system. LXDE is the lightest desktop system that consumes the least amount of memory and CPU. LXDE has not been officially used and promoted by Ubuntu due to its recent development. You can also download the lubuntu-desktop package from the Ubuntu Software Center.

4) GNOME

Starting from Ubuntu 4.10, the default Operating System of Ubuntu is GNOME. After GNOME3, Ubuntu switched to the development of the Unity desktop system to replace GNOME, in order to better meet user needs. Technical support for the classic GNOEM2 system has been stopped, and the download and installation support will be stopped soon. If you want to install GNOME3, you can download the gnome-shell package from the Ubuntu Software Center. GNOME3 is the most similar desktop system to Unity. Although the user interface is different, most of the software is the same.
