1. Basic System

After plugging the CD-ROM to the drive, when prompted to press Enter, type server (not linux m in linux !)

The micro-system will occupy less than 300 MB of hard disk space, but only the text interface (no graphical interface ).

2 subsequent installation process

I did it in the following steps, but the order is not important:

$ Sudo su-this gives you a root shell (#). sudo must be installed.

# Vi/etc/apt/sources. list
(If you are not familiar with vi, you can try nano or other text editors)
Delete # flag to open the system software repository (universe-repository)

# Apt-get update

# Apt-get install icewm

# Apt-get install xserver-xfree86

# Apt-get install x-window-system-core

# Apt-get install xdm

# Apt-get install numlockx

# Apt-get install xterm

Install the X system and iceWM window manager. Then Log On As a normal user:

$ Startx

Start the GUI. (After the first restart, xdm will automatically start and bring you directly into the graphic environment)

The above configuration requires a hard disk space of 468 MB

3. Basic Applications

We think that a mail transceiver, a Web browser, a PDF reader, and an Office suite are the most basic:

PDF Reader

# Apt-get install multicast read

This requires an additional 26 MB hard disk space (in contrast, gPDF only requires 3.2 MB space, but it does not have important features for searching and copying text)

Mozilla we include Flash Player and Acrobat plug-ins to ensure better compatibility with today's networks. (The plug-in only needs 2.5 MB space)

# Apt-get install mozilla flashplayer-mozilla plugin read-plugin

The above takes up a total of 555 MB of hard disk space

Office Suite

When writing this Howto, you have two options (not all ). OpenOffic is updated frequently, but the core is unchanged (only the version number is changed ).

Obtain from the software Repository:

# Apt-get install openoffice.org

This will install Openoffice 1.1.2

Or: Install OpenOffice 1.1.3 through OpenOffice.org:

I downloaded the tar package of OpenOffice 1.1.3 on the official website. After unpacking, go to the tar tree and type:

#./Install

Conclusion

Finally, we have a basic system with a size of 770 MB. We also need a 128 MB swap space, in this way, we only need a 1 GB to 1.5 GB hard disk for Ubuntu Desktop.
