In October April 26, Canonical released Ubuntu 12.04, codenamed Precise Pangolin. This is a long-term Support version (Long Term Support, LTS) with a five-year update guarantee and is especially suitable for Enterprise Desktop systems.
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS has a total of 54 product images and 2 cloud images, and supports 41 languages. The Ubuntu operating system is updated every six months, and a long-term support version is released every two years. Ubuntu 12.04 is the fourth long-term support version of the platform. The upgrade ensures that the upgrade will last until April 2017, therefore, it is more suitable for enterprise users.
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS supports desktop virtualization technologies such as Citrix, VMware, and Microsoft RDP 7.1. It shows that enterprise users have three different office automation options, it also supports remote desktop operations, cloud computing solutions, and built-in LibreOffice. Canonical emphasizes that Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is another more cost-effective option for enterprises that need to upgrade to Windows 7 at a high cost.
For large-scale enterprise deployments with long-term process planning, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is the best desktop system so far, said Jane Silber, CEO of Canonical. As Canonical expands its cooperation with hardware partners, so that regular updates to Ubuntu will support new computers such as Dell, HP, and Lenovo, and Canonical will also support more and more enterprises switching to Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 12.04 uses innovative Head-Up Display (HUD) interfaces to replace traditional menu functions. Since Canonical deems that functions or programs are increasingly complex, the traditional menus that must be selected are no longer suitable for use, while the new HUD interface allows users to perform function searches in various programs, it makes it easier for users to find the desired features and will support voice search in the future.
The server version of Ubuntu 12.04 is the first Linux operating system that can be deployed on a private cloud. Silber said that this version has cloud computing, deployment, services, and other technologies and is widely supported by hardware.
Users can download Ubuntu 12.04 for free, and there are two different levels of commercial support projects available for purchase.
