Screenlets is a desktop tool. I believe you should be familiar with it. It is designed to provide desktop toolbar similar to the Dashboard of MacOSX. Some new features are introduced in Screenlets0.1: KDE-supported (Super) karambatheme converts network widgets into desktop widgets to install network applications (similar to Prism) and create Screelets shortcuts on the desktop

Screenlets is a Ubuntu System (Ubuntu is a good release for linux) software that can add various gadgets on the desktop, such as instant stickers, clocks, weather forecasts, calendars, and so on. This software is similar to the Dashboard in Mac OS X and can be used with Compiz or Beryl for decoration or extended desktop.
Install Screenlets in Ubuntu 13.04
Open the terminal and enter the following command:
Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: screenlets/ppa
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get install screenlets
